I have a very complicated relationship with my future self. Honestly, I think she is the most irresponsible person I know.
Every night, before sleeping, I make elaborate plans for the next day. I promise myself that tomorrow I will wake up early, exercise, study for six hours, eat healthy, drink enough water,
organise my room, and finally become the mysterious, disciplined woman who has her entire life together. My future self agrees to everything. She is very ambitious at 11:47 PM.
Unfortunately, the moment morning arrives, she becomes unavailable. My alarm rings, and suddenly I am negotiating with myself like a lawyer defending a criminal. Just five more minutes. I worked hard yesterday. I deserve rest. Besides, successful people probably sleep well too.I have absolutely no evidence for this argument, but confidence has never been my problem.
Then comes the studying.I sit at my desk, arrange my books, sharpen my pencils, fill my water bottle, and organise everything with the precision of a NASA scientist preparing for a rocket launch. Finally, I open my textbook.Three minutes later, I remember that my cupboard needs organising.Seven minutes later, I am researching whether penguins have knees.
Twenty minutes later, I am watching a documentary about the Roman Empire. My textbook remains open, silently witnessing the destruction of my academic career. And don’t even get me started on my imaginary conversations.
I can spend an entire evening winning arguments against people who have never argued with me. I deliver extraordinary speeches, expose everyone’s hypocrisy, and leave the imaginary room with dignity. Then, in real life, someone asks me a simple question, and I respond, “Huh? What? Yeah, exactly.”My brain apparently has an excellent internet connection to fictional situations but terrible network coverage in reality. The most entertaining part is my shopping wishlist. I save clothes for the woman I intend to become: organised, elegant, productive, and emotionally stable. She owns matching pyjama sets, reads books before bed, drinks enough water, and never makes impulsive decisions.
I currently have seventeen unfinished tasks, three abandoned hobbies, and a water bottle that has been sitting beside me for four hours. But the vision is beautiful.
Sometimes I wonder whether my future self is actually a successful woman or just a fictional character I created to make my present self feel inadequate.Because, apparently, I am supposed to transform my entire personality overnight while maintaining a reasonable sleep schedule and glowing skin.Absolutely.Why don’t I also solve world hunger before breakfast?
However, I have recently reached a groundbreaking conclusion: perhaps my future self doesn’t need another unrealistic timetable. Perhaps she needs me to stop treating every
ordinary day like a failed attempt at becoming a completely different person.I can make mistakes, waste an afternoon occasionally, and still work towards something meaningful.
Progress does not always look like waking up at five in the morning with a perfectly organised life.Sometimes it looks like finally opening the textbook after three hours of procrastination. And honestly? At this point, I will take it.
My future self and I are still working through our differences. She has big dreams, and I have questionable time-management skills.
But at least we have one thing in common.Neither of us knows what we’re doing. We’re just hoping nobody asks for a progress report.

I would advice you not to be hard on yourself and have faith. As soon as you will notice something falling apart due to negligence, you will get all ducks in the row. Nobody is born disciplined but one needs to get disciplined if they wish to succeed. Take one step at a time to build a careful and thoughtful future. You will reach there, I trust you.

Omg this is literally my life, that future self who is super ambitious at 11:47 PM and makes all those big plans for tomorrow - wake up early, workout, study, eat healthy, organize room, I do the exact same every night. And then in the morning the alarm rings and that future self is just gone, suddenly I'm making excuses like just 5 more minutes. The way you described negotiating like a lawyer defending a criminal is too accurate and so funny. You captured that procrastination struggle so perfectly.

I write about the little things we often ignore—the quiet thoughts, ordinary moments, and emotions that stay with us long after the day ends.
