Why don't you drink?

I was at a corporate event where a colleague came to speak with me, "what are you going to have?"
"I already have kala khatta soda. I am good," I responded. I very well knew what was going to come next.
"Get real drink, not this childish stuff. What do you want, just tell me? Martini, Bloody mary, just say it," He was not backing off.
"I am good. Thanks for asking anyway," I tried to conceal my frustration.
"You are such a spoil sport. Why don't you drink?" He said angrily and went back to his group. As if I had committed a crime by staying away from the spirits.

This question always comes. Every time I get asked it I feel really frustrated. I believe that this is a very inappropriate and insensitive question to be asked. Let's dive into it.

At a lot of social events there would be people who go on asking everyone which is their a drink of choice. After that they go on pushing their favourite drinks on to other people. Those who wish to stay away from spirits, they tell them that they are spoil sports or they are missing fun in their lives (spoiler: they are not missing fun but they successfully prevent the hepatic damage that comes with spirits). I have also seen certain instances where people make the teetotalers feel guilty for not having spirits. What I do not understand is why is there need for everyone to get zonked out?

Now let's come to the really issue. There are people who want to push spirits on to other people. Do they understand a few things?
Some people intentionally want to stay away from spirits. It could be because they believe that the spirits are not good for them or simply do not find them appetizing or appealing. They could be teetotalers or they could be recovering from their dependence. Some people also want to avoid spirits because of their religious belief. Irrespective of what the reason is it is completely their choice to indulge in or stay away from spirits.

In today's world we are very much aware of the liver damage and liver injuries that are caused by spirits. Scientifically it has been proven that alcohol intake increases the risk of cardiac disorders, hepatic disorders, as well cancer. Gone are the days where wine makers advertised wine as a cardioprotective drink. Science has proven time and again how harmful spirits are to our body and mind. Yet some people wish to indulge into those harmful substances. Fine - your life your choice. But that does not give anybody any authority to push their choices on to anybody else specifically when it is harmful to health.

In my case I had always been a teetotaler. I always stayed away from spirits mainly because of the health reasons. Yet I had met several people who almost wrote thesis on how I was missing all the fun in my life because I was a teetotaler. They tried a lot to pursuade me to indulge into spirits however I always stayed away from them. And this question always bothered me that why I was expected to provide justification towards my healthy choices to anybody. I do not have to justify myself for making healthy choices and mindful intake for myself.

To my readers: remember that the question "why don't you drink" is never appropriate for any settings. If you drink then you have the right to continue or discontinue. But you do not have the right to ask anybody to justify their life choices. Live and let others live.

When someone asks why you don't drink, you
