Shor in the city

The era of experimental movie started in 2000s which was continuing in 2010s as well. In this era, several movies where made in which the film makers were ready to take risk. The filmmakers wanted to make movies which were unlike the typical masala movies for which Indian film industry is known for. They wanted to try new ideas. They wanted to make films which were more relatable to the masses. One of such films is "Shor in the city". When this film was released it was praised by the critics for the premise. However it was considered to be an average performing film at box office. In my opinion this film deserves much more recognition and love.

Let us first understand what this movie is all about. The film deals with three parallel stories. A student who is struggling to get into a professional sporting team, a man who owns business of pirated books, and an NRI who is planning to start a business in Mumbai. All three stories take place in the city of dreams which is Mumbai. All three stories take place parallely. All stories take place around the biggest festival of Mumbai which is Ganesh Chaturthi. I will not get much into the plot because the plot is the main character of the film. All three stories take place parallely only to be united towards the end of the movie.

There is a lot happening in the movie. There is no simple way to describe the plot and the storyline of this film. To a greater extent the characters are relatable. What I like the most about this film is how they have shown the atmosphere and spirit of Mumbai around Ganesh Chaturthi festival. The vibrancy and the energy that is shown in the film is perfect. While watching the film I felt as if I am in the crowd being excited for the favourite festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The narrative of the film to its tightly bound. The film is fast paced. Each minute something is happening. Slight distraction and you will definitely miss something big in the movie. With each minute the film keeps the audience at the edge of their seat. While watching the film we always have a constant question in our minds: what is going to happen next?

The story line for each character is crafted masterfully. We feel for each character and each story. We feel that there should be a way so that we can help the character who is in front of us. Being from Mumbai every situation that was shown on the screen felt relatable and real.

In addition to the plot I would like to give props to the cast and the crew. The performances are brilliant. The actors in their limited role and capacity give full justice to their own characters. The songs which generally play in the background are melodious and soothing to listen to. Everything about this film is very different from the ones that we had seen in 80's and 90's. This is one of the best example of the films which were made on low budget but had amazing potential.

It is really disheartening that films likes these do not get the recognition from the audience. Now this film is available on a leading OTT platform. I hope that in the digital space this film finds its place and becomes a cult classic.
