Ahista ahista

One of my friends used to say that if the movie stars Abhay Deol then it has to be a great movie. To a greater extent I agree with his thoughts. Abhay Deol's filmography is definitely interesting and also it is unconventional. While most of his films are talked about and praised, there is one particular movie which did not receive much recognition. This movie is Ahista Ahista.

I watched this movie recently on an ott platform. Though the movie was little on a slower pace I really enjoyed this film. I agree that it was not suitable for the masses however I believe it should have received at least some recognition.

The plot of this movie is very different and interesting. A man works at a local marriage registrar's office acting as a fake witness. When couples do not have witness he acts as a witness from their side and charges some standard fees for this act. While working he comes across a woman who had eloped from her home and had been waiting for her lover to join her. He strikes a conversation with that woman and learns that they plan to get married once her lover arrives. The lover never arrives. He decides to help the woman by getting a place for her to stay. He also helped her to get a job at an old age home. He becomes good friends with the woman. The woman tells him that he should look for a good job because he has a potential to become a successful professional. As per the women's advice he starts with a temporary job at the bank and then applies for a permanent position. Both are progressing in their respective professional careers. Both also start falling in love with each other. They are about to get married that is when the women's lover arrives. The women's lover tells her the story why he could not come when they had planned to elope. The lovers story is the real one and hence the women decides to forgive him. The woman marries her lover and the man acts as the witness for their court marriage. After that he demands the fees to be paid indicating that he does not want to keep any personal relationships and wants to fullfill his one professional obligation.

The story is something that we can categorize under tragedy and romance. The story and the film builds up slowly. It takes its own time to established the characters and their story. The depiction of the hero traits for the protagonist has been exemplary. I like that they have not shown the protagonist to be a very good person but rather showing him as a grey character. He has been shown as a selfless man while he wants to help the unknown woman. Also When he falls in the in love with the woman he has been shown to be a selfish man. It is a good film to be watched on a lazy evening and it could also be a thought provoking film.

Overall I really enjoyed this movie. I believe that even though it is a romantic movie it tries to break the mold and decides to venture into an unknown territory. Being a romantic movie it still tries to experiment with the plot and hence at least for the effort of the film makers I believe it deserves a second chance.
