As I mentioned in my previous article, the 2000s was really a crazy time to be alive. The trends were one of the reasons why it felt like a strange era. One of the trends of 2000s that was completely impractical was the low rise jeans.
These jeans would not be anywhere near the waist. They would rest at the pelvic girdle which is even below the lower abdomen. At that time these were the only type of jeans available.
Now let me start by telling you why these low rise jeans were problematic. Any stylist would have hated them because they were terrible articles. In terms of the practical application lying low on the body day would visually elongate the torso and make the legs look shorter. It would divide the body in half making it unattractive. It would make the body look disproportionate.
Besides these jeans always had the threat of wardrobe malfunction. While sitting down they would slip even further. That would increase the chances of unnecessary exposure. To prevent this from happening one would require to wear long tops. This again would create a visible asymmetry. Overall the outfit would look unflattering.
Other problem with low rise jeans was the look and feel. Most jeans would be form fitting. These would be really uncomfortable because they would be too tight. Fitting wise they been would be worse than the skinny jeans which we had seen in the decade of 2010s.
Next what how they would look. Low rise jeans would look good only on the people who were slender and tall. On others they would overpower the look, making the user either short or plump. Often times it would feel as if low rise jeans had been designed only for models and people from entertainment industry.
When low rise jeans became a trend I was in college. Everywhere I would go I would only find low rise jeans and no other type of jeans in the collection. They did not look visually appealing as well. I was personally not preferen these jeans I would opt for trousers than wearing these uncomfortable jeans. I was not alone in this situation. A lot of my friends had been finding them to be uncomfortable and unflattering. The malfunctions of low rise jeans had been frequent. Everybody was hoping for this trend to die of soon.
Also the trend of low rise jeans was problematic at that time. The decades of 1990s and 2000s been obsessed with skinny bodies. These jeans were popularised by the celebrities who had been extremely thin. The fashion industry would often say that if the fashion article did not fit the body of the user then the problem was not with the fashion article but with the body of the user. These narratives were not uncommon during this time. Hence to a greater extent low rise jeans carried the toxic message from the fashion industry that could destroy the self worth. It did create self doubt. It made the consumer feel inferior. It was the nemesis to body image positivity.
I have plethora reasons to say how bad the trend of low rise jeans was. I pray even today that this trend of 2000 should never make a comeback.
The author argues low-rise jeans had a toxic effect. If you had to wear them, would you

Yup totally relatable. Low waist jeans were doomed. I would prefer discarding them over being uncomfortable
