2000s has to be the decade when the fashion had explored itself in more ways than we can imagine. While there were trends like low waist jeans and crop tops, it also had a trend that was completely opposite to these trends. This trend was layering.

Let me explain how this trend would work.

  1. Wear your jeans first.
  2. After that wear a skirt over the jeans.
  3. Then wear a t-shirt.
  4. After that wear a shrug or a jacket.
  5. Then wrap a scarf around the neck.
  6. Then complete the look with knee high boots.

And that is how the outfit would be completed. This look was mainly popularised by the Disney girls. They would often wear such outfits to look youthful and also not provocative. After seeing the favourite Disney actress wearing such outfit the teenage girls wanted to make a replica of those outfits and also to give there own twist to it. Most of the times it would not work.

Now I was not in favour of low waist jeans because of the unwanted amount of skin it would show. As compared with low waist jeans I was little comfortable with the trend of layering clothes. But sometimes this layering wood look awkward. Imagine wearing so many layers of clothing in the burning heat of summers in coastal areas. It was a one way ticket to the hospital because of heat complications. In my opinion it was the weather conditions that did not approve to be appropriate for going ahead with such trend.

Also there were many drawbacks to this trend. One was needed to have a good sense of fashion to pull off an outfit where so many layers of clothing needed to be put together. The look would appear coherent only in a very few instances. Otherwise it would look like the person had cleaned the wardrobe and instead of putting back the clothes they decided to wear them.

Of what I had seen the layering trend would look good only with monochromatic outfits especially with black and brown. Otherwise it would look out of place.

Let me be honest and tell you that while I am criticizing this trend I to had dressed up in the similar way in that decade. I too had worn a denim skirt over jeans pair with a t-shirt and a jacket. At that point of time I felt that I had aced this fashion trend. But looking back at the photos from that time I get a second hand embarrassment. I could not believe myself that I created that outfit, looked in the mirror, and approved it to go outside wearing it. It did not look atrocious yet it did not look a coherent outfit. But I also forgive myself thinking that as a teenager it was a bad fashion choice on my end. I learned from my own experience that the style that celebrities wear would not often go well with the day to day life of common people like me.

Anyway in my opinion layering masterfully still creates and elegant look. But the 2000s trend of layering was neither masterful nor creative, hence this is one trend that I wish to not see again.

When you see a fashion trend you loved as a teen, do you

Haha I felt this so hard. Looking back at my own layering phase - the tank top over t-shirt over another top, all those necklaces - I cringe so much. But honestly at that time we all thought we looked iconic. Your writing captures that second hand embarrassment perfectly.
