A Wednesday
An incredibly grouping thriller that takes place over the course of a single afternoon in Mumbai. An unnamed, highly intelligent common man calls the coolest claim to have planted the release of four terrorist. It feels unrelenting tension and features stellar performances by Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher.
The whole movie is basically a cat and mouse conversation between the caller and the commissioner with a city on edge. No big action sequences, no romance. Just dialogue and moral questions.
It was so well received that it was remade in Tamil as “Unnaipol Oruvan” and in Telugu as “Oruvan”, and even inspired a Hollywood version called “A Common Man”.
A strong theme of morality is followed in the film. You question….Is it wrong if the result feels right? The film doesn’t give easy answers.It makes you decide .
The film worked so well because of three factors : minimalist filmmaking , Dialogue, Pacing.
One set ,one phone line and still edge of the seat tension.
Lines like “Ek Aam Aadmi” became iconic . The writing is crisp and realistic .
Neeraj Pandey went on to make special 26, Baby and Rustom, but many fans still say Wednesday is his best because of how simple and powerful it is.
