“A woman isn't allowed to be killed in war, and you people kill her in love?”
I came across this line, and honestly, it made me think about how differently we understand love and how differently some people experience it.
Love is supposed to be a place where you can breathe freely. A place where you don't have to think twice before speaking, hide your feelings to avoid
an argument, or constantly prove that you're worthy of being chosen. Yet, sometimes, the very person who promises to protect your heart becomes the reason you spend nights questioning your own worth.
And the saddest part? People often don't notice when it starts happening.
It doesn't always begin with something big. Sometimes, it's a small comment that makes you feel less confident. Sometimes, it's an apology you keep making just to end an argument, even when you know you weren't wrong. Sometimes, it's slowly giving up the things you love because someone makes you feel guilty for enjoying them. You adjust a little, compromise a little more, and eventually, you look at yourself and wonder when you became someone who is always trying not to upset another person.
Of course, every relationship requires patience, understanding, and compromise. Nobody is perfect, and
disagreements are normal. But there's a difference between growing together and slowly disappearing to keep someone else comfortable.
Love should ask you to understand another person, not abandon yourself.
I think we sometimes romanticise suffering too much. We call sleepless nights proof of love, jealousy proof of care, and endless waiting proof of loyalty. We tell ourselves that if we love someone enough, things will eventually change. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But how much of yourself are you expected to sacrifice while waiting for that possibility?
A woman can be strong and still feel broken by the person she trusted. She can smile in public while carrying conversations in her mind that nobody else knows about. She can continue with her studies, work, responsibilities, and everyday life while quietly trying to understand why something that once made her happy now hurts so much.
And this isn't only about women.
Anyone can lose themselves in a relationship that takes more than it gives. But women, in particular, are often taught to be patient, to adjust, to forgive, and to keep relationships
together, even when their own feelings are being neglected.
We need to stop treating someone's ability to tolerate pain as proof that they deserve more pain.
Real love isn't perfect. It can be complicated, and it requires effort from both people. But it should still leave room for respect, honesty, freedom, and peace. You should be
able to disagree without being humiliated, set boundaries without being punished, and be yourself without fearing that you'll become difficult to love. Because at the end of the day, love isn't supposed to be another war a person has to survive.
If loving someone means losing your peace, your voice, and the person you used to be, perhaps it's time to ask whether you're being loved or simply being asked to endure.
Nobody should have to lose themselves just to prove that their love was real.

If loving someone means losing your peace, your voice, and the person you used to be, you should
