Chapter 3 of 3
The things we carry forward

There are places we leave behind, people we grow apart from, and versions of ourselves we quietly outgrow. But leaving something behind doesn’t mean it disappears completely.
Some things follow us.A sentence someone once said.
A habit we picked up from a person we no longer talk to.
A song that still reminds us of a particular year.
A street we haven’t visited in years but could probably walk through with our eyes closed.
Maybe growing up isn’t really about letting go of everything.Maybe it’s about learning what deserves to come with us.
We carry lessons from people who hurt us, even when we wish we hadn’t met them.We carry kindness from people who treated us gently.
We carry the courage of someone who believed in us when we didn’t believe in ourselves. We carry pieces of childhood into adulthood without even realising it.
Sometimes it’s the way we laugh.Sometimes it’s the food we still crave when we’re having a difficult day.
Sometimes it’s the way we check whether everyone has reached home safely because someone once did that for us.
And sometimes, it’s a fear.A fear created by something that happened years ago, quietly sitting in the background of a completely different life.
That’s the strange thing about time.It changes circumstances much faster than it changes us.
You can leave the room where something happened, but your mind may continue returning there.
You can stop talking to someone, but still find yourself wanting to tell them something when something funny happens.
You can move on from a chapter and still remember exactly how it felt to be that version of yourself.Maybe that’s not failing to move on.
Maybe that’s simply remembering. We often talk about healing as if the goal is to forget.
To reach a point where nothing hurts, nobody is missed, and the past becomes completely irrelevant. But perhaps healing isn’t becoming someone who remembers nothing.
Perhaps it’s becoming someone who can remember without being pulled backward. You can look at an old photograph and smile without wanting your old life back.
You can miss someone without needing them to return. You can appreciate who you were without becoming that person again.
And you can forgive yourself for the things you didn’t know at the time.Because we judge our younger selves with knowledge they didn’t have.
We look back and think, “Why didn’t I see it?”Why didn’t I leave sooner?Why did I stay?Why did I trust them?
Why didn’t I speak? But that version of you was doing the best they could with what they understood then.Maybe they needed the experience to become the person standing here now.
So I’m learning not to hate the chapters that ended badly. Some chapters taught me what I deserve. Some taught me what I don’t.Some gave me beautiful memories.
Some gave me boundaries. And some simply taught me that not everything is meant to last.I don’t want to carry everything forward anymore.
I want to carry the lessons, not the guilt. The memories, not the bitterness. The love, not the expectations. The growth, not the regret.
Because there is a difference between carrying your past and carrying the weight of your past. One reminds you where you’ve been. The other keeps you from moving.
And maybe growing up is slowly learning the difference. We don’t have to erase our old selves to become someone new.We can thank them.
For surviving things we thought we’d never get through. For loving people who taught us something. For making mistakes that became wisdom later.
For continuing even on days when they didn’t know what they were continuing toward. Then we can turn the page. Not because the previous chapter wasn’t important.
But because there are still pages left. And maybe the most beautiful part of becoming someone new is realizing that we get to decide what comes with us.
Some things can stay behind. Some things can be forgiven. Some things can be remembered. And some things…
can finally be put down.Because the next chapter shouldn’t have to carry the weight of every chapter before it.
When you look back on a difficult past experience, do you
Your vote is final.
