Letting go of expectations

Many of us grow up with a picture of how life is supposed to look. We imagine finishing education on time, finding the perfect job, building meaningful relationships, and achieve our goal without too many setbacks. We also carry expectations from our family, society and even ourselves. Without realising it, we became measuring our life against those expectations.
The problem is that life rarely follow the plan we create in our mind. Sometimes opportunities come later than be expected and sometimes things we worked hard for do not happen. There are moments when we give our best and still do not get the result we hoped for, these expectations can leave us feeling disappointed not because we failed, but because reality did not match our ‘expectations’.
One of the biggest source of pressure today is comparison. It is easy to look at Other people’s lives and believe they are moving ahead while we are standing still. Social media often shows, promotions, graduation, vacations, and achievement. We compare our ordinary day with someone else, highlight reel and start questioning our progress.
Overtime, I have realised that expectations can sometimes become heavier than reality itself. The more tightly we hold onto a fixed outcome, the harder it become to accept different path. Instead of enjoying the journey, we become so focused on reaching a particular destination that we forget to appreciate how far we have already come. We did not appreciate the small progress. We just look for the main goal that is already so far from us and those small steps are helping us to reach there.
Letting go of expectation does not mean giving upon our dreams, it simply means allowing life to unfold in its own way. We can still work harder, stay committed and have goals, but we also need to accept that not everything will happen according to our timeline. Sometime delays bring better opportunity and unexpected changes leads to places we never imagine. So, I think we should trust the god’s plan.
This lesson also applies to our expectations of other people. We often expect others to understand us, behave a certain way or always meet our hopes. When they do not, we feel hurt or disappointing. As we grow older, we realise that everyone is dealing with their own struggle, fears, and expectations. Accepting people for who they are, instead of who we expect them to be, bring healthier and more peaceful relationships.
Life becomes lighter when we stop trying to control every outcome. We cannot predict everything and we cannot force life to follow our plans. What we can control is our attitude, our efforts and the way we respond to whatever comes our way.
Letting go of expectations is not about settling for less. It is about making space for possibilities we never consider before. Sometimes the life we never plan become the life that teach us the most. When we stop chasing the perfection and start expressing the unexpected, we discovered that happiness is often found in place we never thought to look.
When life doesn't go as planned, do you trust the process or try to force the outcome?
Your vote is final.
