The evening arrived faster than either of them expected.
Dark clouds covered the sky once again, turning Blackwood Town cold and silent.
Ethan stood outside the old clock tower, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He checked his phone.
5:47 PM.
A familiar voice came from behind.
"You actually came."
Ethan turned.
Jake stood there with a flashlight in one hand and a backpack on his shoulder.
"I thought you'd change your mind."
"I almost did," Ethan admitted.
"But if we keep running from stories..."
"...we'll never know the truth."
Jake gave a nervous smile.
"Then let's go."
Without another word, they started walking toward the edge of Blackwood Town.
The streets slowly became empty.
The houses disappeared behind them.
Even the sound of traffic faded away.
As they got closer to the forest...
The air became strangely colder.
Neither of them spoke anymore.
Only the sound of their footsteps echoed along the lonely road.
After nearly thirty minutes of walking...
They finally saw it.
Blackwood Forest.
A tall iron gate stood half open, covered in rust and creeping vines.
Beside it stood an old wooden sign.
BLACKWOOD FOREST
STAY AWAY AFTER DARK
The letters were faded...
As if they had been there for decades.
Jake stopped walking.
"This is your last chance."
Ethan looked at him.
"To do what?"
"Turn back."
Silence.
The forest ahead was completely still.
No birds.
No insects.
No wind.
Nothing.
It didn't feel empty.
It felt...
as if something was listening.
Ethan's heartbeat grew faster.
His grandmother's trembling voice echoed inside his mind.
"Never... ever... go into that forest."
For a moment...
He almost stepped back.
But then he remembered the missing girl.
The torn newspaper page.
The fear in everyone's eyes.
If nobody dared to search for the truth...
It would remain buried forever.
He looked at Jake.
"I'm done running from stories."
Jake took a deep breath.
"Then..."
"...there's no turning back."
Together...
They crossed the gate.
The instant their feet touched the muddy forest path—
BANG!
The iron gate slammed shut behind them.
Both boys spun around.
Jake's face turned pale.
"What... what was that?"
Ethan looked at the trees.
Not a single branch was moving.
There was no wind.
The forest was completely silent.
Slowly...
He reached for the gate.
It wouldn't move.
It was as if someone...
—or something—
had locked it from the other side.
Jake whispered,
"I don't think..."
"...we're alone anymore."
Far ahead...
Deep between the towering trees...
Something shifted in the darkness.
Too tall to be a person.
Too still to be an animal.
Then...
It was gone.
Ethan stared into the darkness.
Before either of them could speak...
A faint whisper drifted through the trees.
"Ethan..."
It wasn't Jake's voice.
It wasn't human.
Both boys froze.
To be continued...
When confronted by the unknown in a dark forest, do you
