The silence wasn’t empty.It breathed.
Mira stood frozen beneath the unfamiliar sky as countless shelves stretched into infinity, each glowing with a pale golden light. There was no wind, yet the pages of thousands of books turned on their own, creating a sound like distant whispers.
The library behind her had vanished.Only the leather-bound book remained in her hands.
She spun around, hoping to find the street, the old librarian—anything familiar. There was nothing except endless stories waiting to be opened.
Then she heard footsteps.Slow.Measured.Not approaching…
circling.“Who’s there?” she called.No answer.
Instead, another book slid from a nearby shelf and landed softly at her feet. Its cover carried a single sentence.
DO NOT READ YOUR OWN ENDING.Mira swallowed.“This has to be a dream.”
“It isn’t.”The voice came from somewhere above.
She looked up to find a figure sitting atop one of the towering bookshelves. Wrapped in a long black coat stitched together from scraps of old
pages, the stranger closed the book they had been reading and leaped down with impossible grace.
They couldn’t have been much older than her.Their eyes, however, looked centuries old.“You read the Key Book,” they said. “That means the library has accepted you.”
“I don’t even know where I am.”“You aren’t where.”They smiled faintly.“You’re inside.”“Inside what?”
The place where every story begins before it’s written.”Mira laughed nervously.“That’s impossible.”“So is a book writing about you while you’re reading it.”
She had no reply. The stranger pointed toward the leather-bound book still clutched against her chest.“It chose you.”“It warned me.”“It always does.”“What happens in seven days?”
For the first time, the stranger looked away.“I don’t know.”“You just said you knew this place.”“I know its rules.”“And those are?”They raised a finger.“First—never tear a page.”
Another finger.“Second—never speak your true fear out loud.”A third.“And finally…”Their expression darkened.“…never finish a story that has already started writing you.”
A cold chill ran through Mira.“What happens if I do?”The stranger didn’t answer.Instead, they gestured toward the horizon.Only then did Mira notice something moving between the shelves.
At first, it looked like drifting smoke. Then the smoke gathered into the outline of a person. No face.No voice.Only countless words floating beneath its skin, rearranging themselves every second. It wasn’t walking.
It was…editing. As it passed a nearby bookshelf, several books vanished without a sound. Not burned. Not destroyed.Simply erased, as though they had never existed.
What is that?” Mira whispered. The stranger’s voice dropped almost to a breath.“The Editor.”“It deletes unfinished stories.”“And people?”The silence answered before they did.
The creature suddenly stopped. Its blank head turned.Directly toward Mira. The leather book in her hands grew warm.Letters bled across its cover for the first time.
Chapter Two Has Begun.Far away, the faceless creature smiled without having a mouth.
Then it started running
