Why I still Love Window Seats
I don't know when this obsession started, but if there is a window seat available, I will always use it. Doesn't matter if it's a bus, a train or even the last row in a classroom. Some how sitting next to a window makes me feel like the journey actually mine.
People usually think I am looking outside because there is something interesting. Most of the time there isn't. Just roads trees electric poles people buying vegetables common kids running after a cricket ball, someone hanging clothes on a terrace. Normal things. But maybe that exactly I like it.
When I was younger, train journeys were the biggest adventure ever. My father would wake me up before sunrise and say, "Look outside, we are crossing a bridge." Half asleep but I would Still open my eyes because I'm how everything look magical from the tiny window. My mother always packed too much food. We never finished, but she packed it anyways. Then came the chai sellers comma people shouting "samosa, samosa!" Family trying to fit impossible amount of luggage under 1 seat. Looking back, nothing about it was perfect. Yet I miss it so much.
Even now, whenever I travel, I quitely hope nobody has taken the window seat before me.
A few month ago I was travelling bag after college I was very tired. Like really tired. Class and had been long, my bags at heavier than usual and I didn't even feel like listening to music. I got the window seat by chance. It had rain an hour before so everything outside looked freshly washed. I remember resting my head against the glass and watching little villages pass by.
An old lady sitting besid me suddenly offered me a piece of homemade laddu.
I refuse that first because that's what we had taught to do. She smiled and said take it beta, I made them this morning. I finally accepted. I don't remember her name anymore she told me about her grand children and asked what I was studying then she got of at the next station smile again and left.
I don't think she remembers me.
But I still remember her.
If funny house rangers sometime live behind the warmest memories.
There is a quote I once red that stayed with me "Life is about the journey, not the destination" I know it's a famous quote and maybe people have heard it too many times but every time I get a window seat it somehow make sense again.
These days life feels very fast. Everyone is busy reaching somewhere. We book the fastest train the quickest flight, order instant food, watch videos and double speed. Even I do it. Then I sit near a window and suddenly I don't feel like rushing anymore.
Sometimes I don't even use my phone. I just watch the world passing by.
There is something comforting about knowing that every house I cross as it's own stories. Someone is probably making evening tease. Someone is studying for an example stop someone is waiting for a loved one to come home. In our no these people but for a second our lives travel together.
Maybe that's why I still love window seats.
Because they have the best view. But because the remind me that happiness does not always arrive with loud moments. Sometimes it's quitely sits beside you, outside dusty window while the world keeps moving and you simply...watch.
This is so nostalgic. I too like riding by the window seat. I used to fight with my sibling for window seat. He recently moved out to college and suddenly the window seat is not something I like
Wow. That is such a pleasant memory. Yes window seats do make the travel more interesting.
