Why Carl Jung's Ideas Still Matter Today
When people talk about psychology the first name that usually comes to mind is Sigmund Freud but another psychologist who had a huge impact on the field was carl Jung even though many of his ideas were introduced almost a hundred years ago people still discuss them today his theories are not only used in psychology but also in literature movies philosophy and even personality tests thats one of the reasons why i think carl jung is still such an interesting person to learn about
Carl Jung believed that the human mind is much deeper then we normally think according to him our conscious thoughts are only a small part of who we really are beneath them lies the unconscious mind which stores forgotten memories hidden emotions fears and desires he also believed there was something called the collective unconscious this was one of his most unique ideas he suggested that every human being shares certain universal patterns and symbols no matter where they were born or what culture they belong to at first this sounds strange but when you think about how similar myths and stories across different civilizations it becomes a really interesting idea.
One of Jung's most famous concept is the idea of Archetypes. Archetypes are like universal characters or patterns that appear in stories and also in ourselves For example there is the Hero ,The wise old man, the mother and the trickster these figures can be found in ancient myths modern novels anime movies and even video games once you start noticing them its almost impossible to ignore how often they appear wheather or not someone completely agrees with Jung his ideas make people look at stories from a different perspective.
Another concept that I find intersting is the shadow Jung believed that every person has a shadow which represents the parts of ourselves that we try to hide or ignore these can be fears anger jealousy or even talents that we never accepted instead of pretending the shadow doesn't exist Jung believed that people should understand it and learn to accept it he thought ignoring these hidden parts could actually make them stronger over time i think this idea is very relevant today because many people only want to show the best version of themselves especially on social media.
Jung also talked about the process of individualization this is basically the journey of becoming your true self instead of trying to fit into what society expects a person slowly learns to understand every part of their personality and accepts both their strengths and weaknesses. This process doesn't happen quickly, and according to Jung it can even take an entire lifetime. I like this idea because it suggests that nobody is ever completely "finished". There is always something new to learn about ourselves.
One reason Jung has become popular again is because of personality discussions on the internet. Many people have heard of personality types like INTP, INTJ, INFJ. While the modern MBTI test is very different from Jung's original work, it was inspired by his theory of psychological types. Because of this, many young people end up discovering Jung after taking one of these personality tests. Some people treat these types too seriously, while others simply use them as a fun way to learn about themselves.
Of course not all of Jung's theories are accepted as scientific facts today. Many psychologists criticize some of his ideas because they are difficult to test or prove with experiments. However, that doesn't mean they have no value. Sometimes his theories are better understood as philosophical ideas rather than strict scientific explanations. they encourage people to think deeply about dreams, personality, and human nature instead of looking for simple answers.
Whenever I think about that dream, I remember Carl Jung's idea that dreams can reflect parts of unconscious mind rather than being completely random. I don't know what the mountain symbolized, if it symbolized anything at all, but the peace I felt there has stayed with me ever since. Maybe it was just a dream, or maybe, as Jung believed, it was my mind trying to show me something I couldn't understand while awake.
I chose the symbolic method so that I can relate to real life figures
I am interested in psychology. I have been advised to read carl jungs books. thank you for supporting that recommendation with your article
