Unwell

There is a difference in people's behaviour when the situations change. VC real colours of their nature then the tables are turned around. I am not talking about Big situations like handling successes and failures. I am simply referring to a very relatable situation when we are well and unwell. This story comes from my own experience from my corporate life.

I come from a middle class family. When I grew up my grandmother was severely ill. Seeing how my mother and my father used to nurse and serve grandmother, I felt as if it is my duty to take care of any person who is unwell. If I would see someone who is not well I always used to ensure that I would help them. Sometimes I used to fill up there water bottle; ask them if they need any medicines; ask them if they want to go home. A friend of mine who once had severe migraine, I booked a cab for her so that she could go home in a comfortable environment. I went with her to the gate of our office and helper board the cab. I followed up with her till the time she reached home. I followed up even the next day to ask her if she is feeling any better. She expressed her gratitude to me once she was better and she returned to office. This was when someone else in my contact felt unwell.

Now this is what happened when I was unwell. One particular time in my career I was unwell but still because of some urgent work I reported to office. I had high fever. I had severe cold and cough. Despite wearing a sweater, I was still feeling cold; I was shivering. My condition was bad. Yet no one camr to ask me. Noone asked me if I wanted to go home. Not even my manager.

I feel it is a common courtesy to ask any unwell person about their health anf wellbeing. It does not take anything away from us. Sometimes I feel I was programmed to nurse the unwell seeing my grandmother. My profession added more warmth to my caring nature. However, it is sad to see that these values not being replicated in the world.

I tell all my friends to raise their children to be empathic. I advice them to train their children to ask anyone if they are okay. They should be taught that kindness is a much needed trait and it is free. Little care will go a long way.

Today in 2026 when the world is full of zombies carrying a cellphone, I want to see more caring people. I am sure I cannot be the only one who wants to spread kindness and empayhy. By being empathic we may not change the world in a jiffy. By empathic we can change an unwell person's state of discomfort. This is what makes me happy. Not for boasting that I helped someone but only by knowing that I was able to ease someone's disconfort even by an ounce.

Empathy has became a lost quality in this century. I am sorry you had to get through that and yes...we have to teach our next generation what empathy is and the importance of it
