Thinking about someone else
Sometime it takes the wrong person to make you realise how much you miss the right one.
I had one of those moments recently. Someone was bothering me and after dealing with their unnecessary comments and behaviour for a while. My mind suddenly went to someone completely different. I started thinking about the person who always made me feel comfortable instead.
It was very strange because I had not even been thinking about them before that. I was actually more focused on being irritated with the person in front of me, but the more annoyed I became the more I started remembering how different it feels with someone genuinely cares about you.
It was just the kind of behaviour that slowly gets on your nerves. Sometimes people ask too many questions, make unnecessary comments or keep talking even when you clearly do not feel like talking. You try to ignore it at first, but after a point you just want some peace.
That was when I remember the person who knows when to stop. Someone who can tell from your face that you are not in the mood to talk. Someone who does not keep asking What happened when you clearly need some space. Someone who can sit quietly without making the silence uncomfortable.
I suddenly missed that kind of care.
It made me realise that we sometime understand the value of certain people when we experienced opposite. When someone make us uncomfortable, we remember the person who made us feel safe. When someone does not listen, we remember the person who always listened. When someone makeseverything feel difficult, we remember the person around whom things felt very easy.
I think that is what happened with me. I was not necessary. Missing a particular conversation or a particular day, I was missing the feeling of being understood without having to explain everything.
It is funny how the smallest conversation can bring back memories. One annoying interaction was enough to make me think about old conversation and small moments that i had not remembered in a while.
I remember how the person would sometimes just listen to me, complaining about something completely unimportant. At that time, I probably did not think about it much.
Now, I realise how comforting those little things were.
Maybe we do not always appreciate people probably when they are around. We get used to their kindness and started thinking it is normal. Then someone else treat us differently and suddenly we noticed the difference.
By the end of the day, I was still slightly annoyed, but I was also grateful for the memory. It reminded me that being cared for is something worth appreciating.
I do not know when I will talk to that person again or whether things will always remain the same. But for a little while, I just felt thankful that I had experienced the kind of care. Sometimes one difficult interaction is enough to remind you exactly which people made you feel at peace.
