The Worst Time to Fall Sick

I think the worst part about falling sick is when it happens at a time you were supposed to be enjoying yourself.

I was visiting my hometown, surrounded by cousins and family , and somehow ended up spending almost five days doing nothing but lying in bed.

It started quite unexpectedly, the night before I fell sick , the fan was running at full speed. I remember feeling extremely cold and shivering , but I didn’t think much of it. I certainly didn’t imagine that I would wake up sick the next day.

The following morning, I was completely fine, I even put oil in my hair because I planned to wash it. But after few moments when I was doing my classes, my head started pounding terribly, my entire body felt like it was burning, and my eyes became swollen. I still had oily hair which somehow made the entire situation worse because I absolutely can not tolerate having oil in my hair for long. So despite feeling miserable, I went and washed it.

And then began the longest few days.

The unfortunate thing about being sick in your hometown is that you miss out on everything you came there for. Your cousins are around, people are laughing and talking, conversations are happening and you are simply lying under a blanket, sleeping through most of the day. You don’t get to joke around or participate in anything. You just hear life happening around you while you don’t have the energy to be a part of it.

But nights were undoubtedly the worst.

My nose would be so blocked that I couldn’t breathe properly, forcing me breathe through my mouth. After a while, my lips would become dry, then my throat would start hurting because of constantly breathing through my mouth . It became this irritating cycle where even sleeping peacefully felt difficult.

And as if being sick wasn’t frustrating enough, there was the study backlog waiting for me.

After missing several days, the work starts piling up, then comes the panic : there is so much left, how will I complete everything? Eventually, you become so overwhelmed that you convince yourself to leave it for later, which only makes the backlog worse.

I have also noticed that being sick makes me unusually irritable, everything annoys me a little more easily, but I am recovering now, and unfortunately, recovery also means facing everything I postponed.

When you're sick and stuck in bed, do you
