The Version of Me Everyone Knows

The Version of Me Everyone Knows

There’s a version of me that people know.

She’s the one who smiles at the right time, says the right things, and never really makes things awkward. She knows how to keep conversations going, how to laugh even when she doesn’t fully feel like it, how to be “normal” in every situation. People like her. She’s easy.

But she’s not all of me.

There are so many moments where I stop myself mid-thought. Where I change what I was about to say because it feels like too much, or too complicated, or just… unnecessary. It’s not that I don’t have opinions or feelings. I do. A lot of them. I just don’t always feel like explaining them.

And honestly, sometimes it’s easier this way.

Because the second you show more of yourself, things can change. People start seeing you differently. They question you, misunderstand you, or don’t react the way you expected. So instead, you adjust. You give them the version that works.

Over time, you don’t even notice you’re doing it.

You just automatically filter yourself.

You think before you speak, you hold back reactions, you keep certain things to yourself. And slowly, the version of you that everyone knows becomes… consistent. Predictable.

Comfortable.

But then there are those quiet moments usually at night—when everything you didn’t say is still there.

The real reactions, the unfiltered thoughts, the stronger feelings. The parts of you that don’t get shown during the day. And in those moments, it hits you.

People know you, but they don’t really know you. And it’s not even their fault.

You’re the one who decided what to show.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to just exist without filtering. To say things exactly how I think them, to react without holding back, to not constantly adjust myself depending on who I’m around.

But then again, not everyone deserves that version.

So maybe this isn’t about being fake.

Maybe it’s just about choosing who gets to see what.

Because the truth is, the version of me people know is real.

It’s just not complete.

And maybe one day, I’ll let that complete version of me exist a little more openly. Not all at once, not for everyone—but in small, honest moments. Because hiding parts of yourself feels safe, but it also feels incomplete. And I think I’m slowly learning that being fully seen might be worth that risk.

When people only see the version of you that makes them comfortable, you

sometimes the version of us people know is real , it’s just not the whole story. this really captures the quiet difference between being understood and simply being known
