The Things We Learn From Ordinary Days

Sometimes I feel like we expect every important moment in life to be something big, something that we will remember forever, but most of the things that actually change us happen on completely ordinary days. It can be a normal morning when you wake up late, have breakfast, go to class, talk to someone, come back home and do the same things you have been doing for months. Nothing special happens, yet somehow you learn something about yourself without even noticing it. I think ordinary days teach us more than we give them credit for. They teach us patience when things do not go according to our plans, and they teach us to appreciate small things when life feels repetitive. Sometimes it is just sitting with your family, having a random conversation with a friend, listening to music while travelling, or laughing at something that would probably not even be funny to anyone else. These moments seem unimportant at the time, but later they become the memories we miss. I have noticed that when I look back at certain periods of my life, do not always remember the big events first. I remember small things. I remember certain evenings, certain songs, someone’s voice, the way a room looked, or even what I was thinking while walking home. It is strange how the mind chooses what to keep. There are things I thought I would never forget but can barely remember now, while some completely random moments have stayed with me for years. Maybe that is because life is not really made up of big moments. It is made up of hundreds of little ones that slowly become our life without us realizing it. We are always waiting for something to happen. We wait for the next birthday, the next semester, the next trip, the next relationship, the next achievement, thinking that once we reach it, we will finally feel happy or satisfied. But then we reach it and almost immediately start waiting for something else. I think that is one of the easiest ways to miss our own lives . We become so focused on what is coming next that we forget to notice where we are right now. I am still learning how to enjoy ordinary days instead of treating them like something I simply have to get through. Not every day needs to be productive or exciting. Some days can just be slow, and that is okay. Some days you might not accomplish anything impressive, but maybe you talked to someone who needed you, rested when you were tired, or simply made it through a difficult day. That should count for something too. Growing up has made me realize that happiness is not always a huge feeling. Sometimes it is very quiet. It is found in familiar places, comfortable conversations, favourite songs, evening walks, and moments when you suddenly realize that you are okay. Maybe one day we will look back at this ordinary life we are living now and wish we could return to it for just one more day. After all, ordinary days are not really ordinary when they are the ones making up our story.

Unfortunately none of us are programmed to live in the present. We intend to do everything in the uncertain future.
This is such a beautiful reminder that life isn’t always found in the big milestones, but in the quiet, ordinary moments we often overlook. Sometimes the smallest memories end up carrying the most meaning. Really loved how this captures the importance of simply being present and appreciating life as it happens. 🤍
