The Strange Pressure of Having Your Life Figured Out
There is a strange age where everyone suddenly starts asking you what you want to do with your life.
What are you going to become? What career are you choosing?Where do you see yourself in five years?
What are your plans? And somehow, you are expected to have a perfect answer.
The funny part is that most of us are still trying to figure out what we want to eat for dinner.
Growing up, I thought adulthood would come with some sort of instruction manual. I imagined that one day I would simply wake up and know exactly who I was, what I wanted, and where I was going. But the older I get, the more I realize that almost nobody actuallyknows what they are doing. Some people are just better at pretending they do.There is so much pressure to be successful early. Social media makes it worse. You see people your age getting into amazing colleges, starting businesses, travelling, making money, creating art, winning competitions, and somehow becoming incredibly talented at everything.
Meanwhile, you might just be sitting in your room wondering why you can’t get yourself to study for two hours. And then comparison begins.
You start thinking that maybe you are behind.Maybe everyone else is moving forward while you are standing still.Maybe you aren’t talented enough.
Maybe you aren’t hardworking enough.Maybe you wasted too much time. But perhaps life isn’t actually a race.
We have somehow created this idea that there is a correct timeline for everything. Study by this age. Get into college by this age. Get a job by this age. Earn money by this age. Become successful by this age.And if you don’t?You feel like you failed.
But people aren’t machines running on the same schedule. Some people discover what they love at sixteen. Some at twenty-six.Some at forty. Some people change their careers completely after spending years in one field. Some people take longer because their
circumstances are different. None of that makes their lives less meaningful.I think we need to become more comfortable with not knowing.
Not knowing what career we want. Not knowing where we’ll live. Not knowing who will remain in our lives. Not knowing whether the dream we have today will still be our dream five years from now. There is something beautiful about leaving a little room for life to surprise you.
Maybe the person you are today isn’t supposed to have everything figured out. Maybe this stage of life is meant for trying things, making mistakes, changing your mind, discovering what you like, and even discovering what you don’t like. And honestly, I think we underestimate how much courage it takes to start over.
Changing your plan can feel like admitting that your previous choice was wrong. But sometimes changing direction isn’t failure. Sometimes it is growth.
You don’t have to become extraordinary overnight. You don’t have to have an impressive story at nineteen.
You don’t need to constantly prove that you are doing something important with your life.Sometimes progress looks incredibly ordinary.Getting out of bed.
Studying one chapter.Learning one new skill.Applying for something even though you’re scared.
Trying again after failing.Taking a break without feeling guilty about it.Choosing to believe that your future can still be good even when your present feels confusing.
Maybe that’s what growing up actually is.Not suddenly having all the answers, but learning how to live peacefully with the questions.
So if you are reading this and feeling like everyone else has figured life out except you, take a breath. You are not necessarily behind.
You are just somewhere on your own timeline. And your life does not have to make sense to everyone else for it to become something beautiful.
Maybe we don’t need to know exactly where we’re going.Maybe, for now, it’s enough to keep walking.
When life asks you what you want to do, it's okay to
Your vote is final.
We all are in a matrix
the pressure is real because the more you stress your brain the more it feels stuck and confused
this is actually so deep🫂
