The Smell and the Sound

AnonymousJun 4, 2026255 words

My key fits in the lock. The door opens. And the smell hits me first. It always does. It smells like onions cooking, or sometimes soup. It smells warm. It smells like someone was waiting for me to come back. That's the first part of home.

Then I hear her voice. 'You home?' she calls from the kitchen. It’s not what she says. It’s how she says it. Her voice is like a soft blanket. It covers up all the noisy parts of the day. My shoulders go down. I didn't even know they were up by my ears. I can breathe again.

All day at school, I feel like I'm holding something in. I have to be careful. Say the right thing. Don't be weird. It's so much work. It feels like wearing shoes that are too tight.

But when I walk through my front door, I can take the shoes off. I can be weird. I can be quiet. I can tell my mom about the dumb thing I said in class. And she won't think I'm dumb. She'll just listen. Nobody here looks at me with that look. The one that says I'm not enough.

Here, I'm enough. I can just be.

So home isn't the address. It's not the walls or the roof. It's the smell of dinner when I'm still in the hallway. It's my mother's voice asking if I'm home. It's the feeling that I can finally stop trying so hard. It's the place where my real self lives.

Aww this is awesomely (is that even a word?) written...home is not a place but the person who comes to your mind when you want to have a mental peace

so relatable. whom is where the family is. home is where the love is. the smell of food, the warmth of the words, and the voices of our family will conquer every fear and sadness we have
