The ripples of water
I was watching ripples on water today.ans somehow my mind wandered much further than the water ever did. It started with something completely ordinary. A small stone fell into a pond, creating a circle that slowly spread outward. Then another ripple crossed it. Then another.
Within seconds, the surface that had been completely still was filled with overlapping circles, each one travelling farther than the thing that had caused it. I don't know why I found that so fascinating. Maybe because it reminded me of people. We rarely understand how far our smallest actions travel.
A sentence we say casually might stay inside someone's head for years. A kindness we barely remember might become something another person remembers during a terrible day. A cruel comment might become an insecurity that someone carries long after we have forgotten saying it. We throw little stones into each other's lives constantly.
Most of the time. We don't even notice the ripples. That thought made me think about my own life. There are people who changed me without knowing they did. A teacher who said something at exactly the right moment. A friend who introduced me to something I still love.
Someone who believed in me when I didn't particularly believe in myself. Even people who hurt me left something behind. Their actions became ripples, some disappeared quickly. Others travelled much farther than they probably intended.
Then I started thinking about the things I have done to other people. How many times have I made someone laugh without realizing they needed it?. How many times have I made someone feel ignored? How many people remember something I said that I don't even remember saying? That is a strange responsibility to carry.
We like to imagine that our lives belong entirely to us. But perhaps they don't. Every interaction leaves something behind. A conversation. A memory. A feeling.
A change in someone 's thinking. Even absence can create ripples. Someone leaving your life can alter the way you trust people agterward. Someone entering your life can change the direction you take without either of you realizing it at the beginning.
The water kept moving while I was thinking about all this . The original stone had disappeared beneath the surface. There was no visible of what has caused the first ripple anymore. Only the movement remained. Maybe that is what happens to us too.
We eventually forget the exact conversation, the exact afternoon., the exact reason something changed . But we remember what it did to us bAnd perhaps somewhere without knowing it. We are doing the same thing to other people. Our lives are constantly touching lives we may never fully understand.
That thought is both beautiful and slightly frightening. Because it means I have probably already left pieces of themselves in me. The ripples eventually disappear . But that doesn't mean they never happened.
I watched the pond become still again. For a moment. There was nothing moving on the surface. But I knew the water had already been changed by something that was no longer there. Maybe people are like that. We leave theomwnr ends.
The conversation is forgotten. But sometimes the ripples remains.
