The person I didn't expect to see
I saw my ex today. Not in some dramatic place where the universe could pretend it had planned the meeting. I saw them at a supermarket, standing near the shelves comparing two brands of coffee. I was holding a basket with three completely unnecessary things, and suddenly my carefully ordinary evening became something I hadn't prepared for.
For a second neither of us moved. It was strange seeing a face that once belonged to such a large part of my life reduced to something familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. I recognized the expression, the way they stood even the little habit of touching their hair. But somehow,I no longer knew the person standing there.
They smiled first. I smiled back because apparently even after everything. Some habits survive breakups. We asked the usual questions, Howbare you?. How is work?. How have things been?. Everything sounded polite, almost rehearsed. We spoke like two distant acquaintances who happened to share an unusually detailed history.
I noticed how much had changed. They were wearing a different style had started doing things we once discussed doing together and seemed comfortable in a life that no longer inciluded me. That should not have surprised me.but it did. Somewhere inside . I had kept an outdated version of them frozen in the last chapter we shared.
We talked about ordinary things for several minutes. The Weather, work. Mutual friends. Nothing important. Yet underneath those harmless.sentences was everything we weren't saying. Neither of us mentioned the arguments, the promises the nights we thought we would never separate or the exact moment when loving each other became harder than leaving.
Then they asked whether I was happy. It was such a simple question that I didn't know how to answer it honestly. I said I was doing fine.they nodded and said they were glad. Maybe that was enough. Some questions are not invitations to tell the truth: sometimes they are simply gentle ways of checking whether the other person survived.
When we finally said goodbye there was no hug. There was no dramatic confession or sudden realization that we belonged together. They walked toward another aisle and I stood there holding my basket watching someone who has once known almost everything about me become a stranger again.
What surprised me was that I wasn't devastated. I wasn't secretly hoping they would run back. I wasn't imaginimg Another ending. I simply felt the weight of time. We had once been two people convinced that our relationship was permanent and now we were discussing coffee brands like strangers who happened to remember each other's birthdays.
On the way home. I thought about how breakups don't erase people from your history. They remain attached to certain songs ,streets, jokes, photographs and versions of yourself. But memories are not instructions. Missing a time in your life doesn't necessarily mean you want that life back.sometimes you can remember something fondly without wanting to repeat it.
Tonight, I think I finally understand something I couldn't understand when the relationship ended. Closure isn't always a conversation an apology or a final explanation. Sometimes it is unexpectedly seeing the person again and realizing your heart no longer waits for them to become part of your future. They were once home to me. Today they were simply someone I used to know.
Seeing your ex unexpectedly and realizing they've moved on, you
