The money excuse

The money excuse

My friends planned an outing this weekend and I immediately started calculating whether I could afford it. Between transport, food and tickets, the amount was more that J could possibly spend. I typed three different exe cuses before finally admitting that I was short on money. I expected someone to make a joke or suggest I should have saved better. Instead my friend suggested we meet at home and watch a movie instead.

Everyone agreed and the conversation moved on. Nobody made me feel poor. Nobody demanded an explanation and nobody excluded me. And yet I spend the next hour wondering why telling the truth had to feel so humiliating.

I think sometimes the hardest part of not having enough money is not missing out things. It is the fear that people will see you differently once they know. I wish we talked more honestly about how often financial worries hide behind cancelled plans and vague excuses.

Have you ever pretended to be busy when the real reason was that you couldn't afford to go?

I felt this so deeply. That moment of calculating transport, food and tickets in your head and realizing you just can't make it work is so real. And typing out excuses instead of just saying you can't afford it, I think many of us have been there. It takes courage to actually admit it. Hope your friends understood, true friends always do.

This is such an important topic, and I wish more people spoke openly about it. Sometimes, it’s not the lack of money that hurts the most but the fear of being judged for it. I loved how your friends handled the situation without making you feel uncomfortable. True friendships are about understanding, not expensive outings. We should never have to feel embarrassed about being honest about our financial circumstances. ❀️
