The magic of Music
There are very few things in this world that can make you travel though time without moving and inch. Music is one of them.
A single melody can take you back to the classroom glu haven't seen in years. A familiar Chorus can remind you of a rainy day bus or a family vacation or a childhood birthday or a person who is no longer part of your life. It is strange how memories fade yet songs somehow remember them for us.
I have experienced this more times than I can count.
Sometimes while suffering through my playlist, a song I haven't heard in years suddenly begins to play. Instantly I am not longer sitting in my room. I am somewhere else entirely. I remember the whether, the people around me, even the emotions I had buried deep inside. It is as if music unlocks doors in the mind that nothing else can.
I don't think songs are powerful because of their lyrics alone. They are powerful because of what they witness.
They quietly sir in the background while life happens. They play during our happiest celebrations and our loneliest night. They because the soundtrack of moments we never realise will become memories. Later when we hear them again, they return carrying pieces of our past.
What's fascinating is that the same song can mean completely different things at different stages of life.
A song you dancedbti as a child may one day make you cry because it reminds you of someone you have lost. Lyrics that once sounded ordinary suddenly feels like they were written specifically for you after you have experiencef heartbreak or love or failure.
The music never changed. You did.
I have often wondered why we turn to music when words fails us. May be it's because music understands emotions that language struggles to explain. There are days when I don't know how to describe what I am feeling but somehow a three minute song captures it perfectly. It feels comforting to know that somewhere, someone turned and emotion into a melody and unknowingly made thousands of Stangers feel understood.
Music also has a beautiful way if bringing people together. Complete strangers at a concert sing the same lyrics as though they have known each other for years. Families dance together in living rooms. Friends create playlists for road tropes that become unforgettable memories. Across different languages and cultures, rythem speaks a language every heart seems to understand.
Perhaps that is the true magic of music. It remebers us. It is a memory with a heartbeat. It is a emotion without explanation. And for a few beautiful minutes, it allows us to meet every version of ourselves that we have even been.
