The lesson that i have always carried with myself
As a five year old, with small eyes, big dreams and even bigger innocence, i looked at the world with whatever vision my parents and my teachers could infuse in me. (besides what nature had already established in a human)
I would thank when given a chocolate, I would recite whatever poem was being taught contemporarily in class and I would cry on falling and bursting my knee. These things mingled me among kids of my own age, but what distinguished me was my mother’s lesson that I always repeated like a parrot: “Everything happens for a reason and that reason may not always make sense to you immediately.”
Time and again in my life I have found this to be true.
The first and the silliest example was when I was six years old.
As a girl, who was tomboyish in every way possible, I always complained about my gender, I wanted to be a boy. Every now and then I pestered my mom about why she did not pray to God for me to be a boy, and my mother always said “you are a girl for a reason. Everything happens for a reason.”
Later in the year I was exempted from a punishment because I was a “girl”. Misogynist, yes. Even discriminatory. But in that movement I felt a powerful force of my mother’s words.
Everything does happen for a reason.
As a teenager, I failed the entrance exam for my dream college. I was extremely disappointed. But all that my mother said was “Everything happens for a reason”
Later, I applied to another college that was not even close to what I had wanted for myself.
Yet, I found friends that I would give up my life for. Friends, that if I had gone to my dream university, I never would have found, never would have met.
I have always been a migrant. My dad’s job implied a constant move through out my life. I have never called one place home and I have never had a room that i would give up on when I moved to college. This used to bother me alot.
One day, I met with an acquaintance from our homecity and realised that she had been stuck in a loop without ever having known that she was. I have met several people who have only known one place their entire lives and they do not even know what lies beyond the bubble that they have happily trapped themselves within. Looking back, I am glad of having moved across country and places, having known many cultures and people. My father knows people from several places and has well wishers arpund the globe because he gave up something considered basic.
Right now in life, I am trying to find the purpose of my life and my birth. I get sceptical at times, questioning my worth but every time cynicism takes over me, I lie in my mothers lap and she tells me, “Everything happens for a reason.”
My birth and life has a reason, it just isn’t clear to me now. But I know.
