The Last Seat by the Window

The first day of college, I noticed a girl sitting alone beside the window. I asked if the empty seat was free, and she smiled. She warned me that she hated talkative people during lectures. I promised to stay quiet, but somehow, that promise became impossible after we became friends. We started sharing notes, snacks, jokes, and secrets. I never realized when friendship quietly turned into love, until one evening, her absence felt strangely painful. She belonged to a Dalit family, while I came from a conservative Brahmin household. We loved each other, but our backgrounds made everything frighteningly complicated. One evening, she asked, “Will your family ever accept me?” I stayed silent, because I knew honesty could hurt her more than uncertainty ever could. I finally told my parents about her. My father became silent, my mother cried, and suddenly our ten-year relationship seemed smaller than one family conversation. Her family also feared society. Her mother asked whether I could protect her from cruel relatives. I promised I would never leave her alone. For months, we faced arguments, pressure, insults, and endless questions. Sometimes we cried separately, because neither wanted the other to see their weakness. Then she said, “Maybe we should stop fighting.” Hearing those words terrified me. I realized losing her would hurt more than facing everyone together. We decided not to run away. Instead, we patiently explained our relationship, answered every question, and proved that our love was serious, respectful, and permanent.

This beautifully captures love standing against social barriers. The most powerful part is choosing patience and courage over running away, while keeping their bond respectful and sincere.
