The last piece of chocolate

AnonymousAug 14, 2026515 words

There are some small things that I automatically say for later, even when I know I could enjoy them right away. Chocolate is probably the best example. If I have a few pieces left, I somehow convince myself that I should keep the last one for later. I do not even have a proper reason for doing it. I just like knowing that there is something nice waiting for me.

I had one of those moment recently when I found a small piece of chocolate in my bag. I had completely forgotten that I had kept it there. I was looking for something else when I noticed it, and suddenly I was faced with a very important decision eat it immediately or save it for later.

Obviously, I ate it.

There was something funny about how happy such small things made me. It was not some expensive chocolate or anything special. It was just a small piece that had been sitting in my bag for who knows how long. Still, finding it felt like a tiny surprise to me.

I think we underestimate how much these little things can affect our mood. We usually think happiness has to come from something big, Like getting good news, going somewhere exciting or achieving something important. But sometimes finding your favourite snack in your bag is enough to make you smile.

While eating it, I remember how I used to save sweets when I was younger. If someone give me chocolate, I would sometimes keep it for later because I want to enjoy it at the right time. Of course, the right time usually came a few hours later when I could not stop think about it.

Even now, I still do something similar. I might buy a snack and decide that I will eat it after finishing some work. Then I finish the work and tell myself I will eat it after something else. Somehow, the snack become a reward for doing absolutely normal things.

I think there is something comforting about having a small treat waiting for you. When the day feels tiring, knowing that you have something you like and give you a little reason to look forward to the evening.

At the same time, I sometimes wonder why I keep postponing small happiness. If I want to eat something and I am hungry, why do I feel like I need to earn it first? There is nothing wrong with enjoying something simply because I want it.

Maybe I have because to use to thinking that everything needs a reason. We often wait for special occasion to enjoy things. So maybe keeping one small piece of chocolate for later is fine, but sometime it is also okay to eat immediately.

That little piece of chocolate did not change anything important about my day. It did not solve any problem or make anything easier. It’s simply made me happy for a few minutes.

And honestly, I think that is enough. Sometime you just find chocolate in your bag, eat it, smile and continue with your day.

When you find a small treat you forgot about, do you
