The Joke
He was always the funniest person in the group.
Whenever everyone was sad, he made them laugh.
Whenever someone cried, he made a stupid joke.
One day, someone asked him,
“Why are you always joking?”
He smiled.
“Because if I stop making everyone laugh, someone might notice that I'm not okay.”
Everyone laughed.
He laughed too.
Nobody asked again.
That was the funniest joke he had ever told.
And the saddest one.

This is so true. The people who laugh/smile a lot are the saddest people. Smiling is a constant mask they put up. They make jokes about their state of mind too. It makes me sad how make the best efforts to hide their feelings.
This one hits quietly. 💔 The contrast between everyone laughing and nobody noticing what was underneath makes the ending really powerful. “That was the funniest joke he had ever told. And the saddest one.” is such a simple but effective final line.
