The Fifteen - Minute gossip Session

Today I discovered that our office has a second unofficial department; gossip. It operates without a manager, budget or official meeting invite. Yet somehow everyone knows exactly when it begins . The official name is "coffee break". The unofficial purpose is discussing everyone who isn't currently standing there.

It usually starts innocently. Someone mentions that Vikram from finance left early yesterday. Within thirty seconds, three theories appear. He had a family emergency. He had an interview somewhere else. He was secretly angry with management. Nobody actually knows anything but that has never stopped and office from developing a complete storyline.

Today, the main character was our new project manager. Ananya . She had rejected someone a leave request in the morning, and by lunchtime, apparently she hated the entire team. Someone said she was trying to prove herself. Someone else said she was preparing to replace half the department. A third person simply said, " I knew something was wrong".

The funniest part is how confidently people discuss things they would never say directly, Someone will complain about another employee for twenty minutes and then immediately greet them with. 'Hey! How are you?" When they walk into the room. The conversation changes faster than a browser tab when someone suddenly appears behind you

I am not completely innocent either. I listen. Sometimes I contribute. Occasionally. I pretend to be shocked while secretly enjoying every ridiculous detail. There is something entertaining about watching normally serious adults become investigative journalists because someone changed their profile picture or started arriving at work fifteen minutes later than usual.

But office gossip becomes uncomfortable when it stops being harmless entertainment. A rumour about someone's relationship, financial situation, health, or family can travel through an office faster than official information. By the time it reaches the fifth person , the orginal truth may have disappeared completely. What remains is usually something much more interesting - and much less accurate.

I noticed another strange thing today. People rarely gossip about someone they genuinely dislike alone. They gossip about someone they genuinely dislike alone. They gossip about people they are curious about. The mysterious emplyee who never talks.bThevmqnager who suddenly started dressing differently. The colleague who keeps receiving calls. Human beings hate unanswered questions, and gossip gives us imaginary answer.

Maybe that is why offices are perfect environments for it. We spend more waking hours with coworkers than we sometimes realize, yet we only see tiny portions of theirblives. We know their deadlines, coffee orders, moods, and meeting habits, but not necessarily what happens after they leave the building. The gaps get filled with speculation.

By five o'clock , the gossip Session ended as quickly as it had started . Everyone returned to their desks, opened spreadsheets, answered emails, and became respectable professionals again. Ten minutes later someone sent a message in our group chat asking whether anyone knew why Vikram had left early. Apparently the investigation wasn't finished.

I closed my laptop wondering how much of what we say about people they would recognize as themselves. Probably very little. Gossip is strange because it creates characters out of real people then forgets thouse characters are attached to actual human. beings. Tomorrow there will be another story, another theory, another coffee break. And probably eventually, I will become part of someone's story too.
