The difference between being heard and being understood
I have been thinking a lot about conversation and how they really work. Today, something happened that made me clearly understand the difference between being heard and being Understood. During our conversation at work, I shared an idea about making a work process and little simpler and more organised. Everyone listen carefully noded and even said things like “that sounds like a good idea”. But after that, the conversation move on very quickly. No one asked any question or try to understand my idea better. In that moment, I realise that people had heard my word, but they had not really understood what I was trying to explain. My idea was out there, but it did not connect with everyone that the way I had hoped.
That experience made me think about my own habit too. How many times have I listened to someone while already planning my own reply? I think I have done that more often than I realise. Sometimes we believe we are listening just because we are quiet while the other person is talking. But real listening is much more than staying silent. Being heard simply means someone has listened to your words. Being understood means that they have taken a moment to understand your feelings, your thoughts and the reason behind what you are saying. There is a big difference between the two, and I don’t think we noticed it enough.
I have also experienced the opposite side of this. There have been times when I explained everything that was important to me, but I still walked away, feeling misunderstood. The other person, listen politely, but they did not ask question or try to understand my point of view. It feels like my words were simply heard and then forgotten. On the other hand, I have also met people who ask simple question, Pay attention and make an effort to understand what I really mean. Those conversation always leave me feeling respected and valued.
This difference appears every everywhere in life. It can happen at work, with friends, with family or even during short conversation with people we don’t know very well. Good communication isn’t only about speaking clearly. It is also about listening with patience and trying to understand someone before giving your opinion. That’s small efforts can prevent many misunderstandings and help people feel more comfortable opening up.
Today’s experience reminded me that I want to become a better listener myself. I want to slow down during conversations, give people my full attention, and ask questions instead of making quick assumptions. I know I wouldn’t do it perfectly everytime, but I think every small changes can make a big difference. At the end of the day, everyone want to feel heard, but what we truly remember is the rare feeling of being understood. I think that is what create stronger relationships, build trust abd make every conversation more meaningful.
I also believe that improving communication is a lifelong process. Every interaction give us in a opportunity to learn something new about other and about ourselves.
communication is a two way process. it's really feels and dis hurting when we are either misunderstood or not understood at all. I feel your pain when people heard you but did not understand you. when you will meet the right people they will definitely hear you and understand you.
