The first time I seriously through about filing an income tax return. I expected it to feel like an adult milestone. Instead, it felt like being handed a complicated form in a language I. Was technically supposed to understand but somehow didn't I know people paid taxes. I knew working adults filed. IYRs .

I had heard words like PAN,, TDS, Form 16 AIS, deductions, refunds, old regime,, and new regime. But if someone had put a laptop. In front of me and said "Go ahead. File it. Yourself, "I probably would have stared at the screen and wondered when exactly I was supposed to have learned this.

That is what bothered me.We spend years in school learning equations, definitions, historical dates, and formulas, but many of us enter adulthood without knowing how to read a salary slip or file a tax return. So I decided to understand it.

The first thing I learned is that filling and. ITR does not automatically mean you have to pay additional tax. An income Tax Return is essentially how you reportyourincome and relevant tax information to the government. Depending on your situation, tax. may already have been deducted. You may even be eligible for a refund.

The process begins on the official Income Tax e-filing portal. You log in using your PAN liked account ,go to e-file -Income Tax Return, File Income-Tax Return. choose the correct assessment years, selecr online filing and then choose the ITR. Form that applies to your type of income. For many salaried individuals with relatively straightforward income. ITR-1may apply, but the correct form depends on factors such as income sources, capital gains , business income, residential status, and other details.

Before blindly clickingtheough the form. I would gather everything first. PAN and Asdhaar details. Form 16 if applicable, bank information, details of other income and tax-related information. I would also check the Annual Information Statement, or AIS, which gives a broader. View of financial information reportef against the taxpayer and can help in reviewing information before filling.

Then comes the part that actually made me nurvous checking the pre-filled information andalimg sure it is correct. The portal allows you to review and edit relevant details, enter additional income or deductions where applicable, preview the return , validate it. and submitbit. But submitting is not the final step. The return must also be verified. The official portal provides electronic verification options, and verification is an essential part of completing the filling process.

What made the whole thing unexpectedly emotional for me was realizing that this is what adulthood quietly looks like. Oneday your parents maybe the ones handling the documents, worrying about dedications, asking an accountant for help

Then these Responsibilities start becoming yours too.

I didn't think everyone needs to become a tax expert. Complicated financial situations deserve professional advice. But basic financial literacy should not feel like secret knowledge that ordinary people are forced to put someone else to understand.

Because independence is not only about earning your own money.

Sometimes, it is sitting in front of a government portal, understanding what you are doing , and realizing that adults has quietly handed you another responsibility. And this time , at least by now you know where to begin.

When facing a new adult responsibility that feels overwhelming, do you

Everything related to income tax feels like a challenge. It feels like the system wants us to fail and cry. It feels like a trap where we are pushed into giving up on claiming the returns.
