Our heavy home...
I watched an ant today. It was carrying a big crumb across the sidewalk. It knew exactly where it was going. The world makes sense to the ant. The big tree in the park was here before my house was. I think this place belongs to them first. The trees and the ants and the birds.
We are just visiting. But we are not being very good visitors.
We make everything feel heavy. The air feels thick sometimes. The news on the TV is always loud and sad. The grown-ups look heavy too. Like they are carrying something you can't see.
They are always busy sorting people. Putting them in boxes. This box is for your skin color. This box is for where your family came from. This box is for how much money you have. It seems so strange. We are all just people. We all need to eat and sleep.
Some people have houses so big they could get lost inside. Other people don't have a house at all. It feels like a game where the rules are not fair for everyone.
We are making our home messy. There is trash in the river. The sky is sometimes a funny gray color. People are always yelling or looking worried. It feels like we are breaking our own house, and we don't know how to stop.
Everyone wants more. More stuff. More money. They run so fast to get it. They don't look down to see what they are stepping on. They don't see the mess they leave behind.
I wish we could be more like the ant. Just take what we need. And help carry the crumbs home.
This made me stop and think. Sometimes the smallest things, like an ant, remind us of truths that we often forget in our busy lives.
the bittersweet notes aside, i love how you put your words so beautifully it feels less a worry and more something motivate us to feel the small building pains
So true. We are told not to be greedy but taught to be greedy. We are told from the childhood to look ahead and save for the future. In this process we feel that whatever we have is not enough and we gather more things. But nothing makes us happy or satisfied.
