One empty seat

If you travel by metro regularly, You know that finding an empty seat can sometime feels like winning a small competition. It may not sound like a big achievement, but after a long day of classes, work or simply walking around the city, one empty seat can make the journey feel different. Whenever I enter a crowded Metro, I already preparemyself to stand for the rest of the trip. I find a place to hold the handrail, adjust my bag and tell myself tht It is only a matter of time before I reach my destination. But somehow, in the back of my mind, I still hope that someone will get off at the next station.

As the Metro stops, everyone quickly look around. It is funny because nobody says anything, but almost everyone is secretly hoping for the same thing. The moment someone stands up, several pair of eyes immediately noticed the empty seat. It becomes a silent race without anyone actually running. Sometime I am.lucky enough to be standing right next to the person getting off. Other times, someone reaches the seat before I even realise it is available. In those moments, I cannot help but smile. It is such a small thing yet everyone seems to understand how valuable that seat is.

When I finally get one, immediately feels relieved. I can put my bag on my lap, rest my feet and simply enjoy the journey. It is surprising how quickly my moon changes. Standing for another twenty or thirty minutes, suddenly turn into a comfortable ride home. One thing I have noticed is how different people behave in the Metro. Some passengers are completely lost in their books, some are listening to music and many are scrolling through their phones. There are people returning home after work, student carrying heavy backpacks and travels visiting the city for the first time. Even though we all are strangers but for a few minutes we share the same journey.

I also admire the people who offer their seeds to elder passengers, pregnant woman’s or someone caring a small child. It is a simply act of kindness that often goes unnoticed, but it makes public transport a little more thoughtful. Watching these moments reminds me that small gesture can make someone stay easier.

There are also days when I decide to keep standing, even if a seat becomes available. If my journey is short or someone else looks more tired than I do, it feels right to let them have it. Surprisingly, that feels just as satisfying as sitting down myself.

Looking back, it is funny how one empty seat can become the highlight of an ordinary commute. It does not change my life, but it certainly changes the next few minutes. Sometime happiness is not about grand achievement or expensive things. Sometimes it is simply finding one empty seat at exactly the right time and enjoy the rest of the ride in peace. That small comfort can quiety turn an exhausting day around.
