My Secret
The wind was so strong last night. It knocked things over. This morning I went outside. The grass was wet. I saw the little nest on the ground. It was all broken.
There were tiny blue pieces of egg inside. So small. My stomach felt sad. Like I had dropped something important. The world felt a little wrong.
I looked at the house. No one was awake yet. It was just me and the quiet yard. So I started to fix it. I found the best twigs. I gathered soft, dry grass. I pushed it all back together with my fingers. It was hard. It kept falling apart.
But I didn't stop. I used some mud to make it stick. Finally, it looked like a nest again. I found a safe spot in the tree. I tucked it right between two branches. Somewhere the wind couldn't be so mean.
I stood back and looked at it. My secret. No one saw me do it. No one will ever know. They will just see a nest in a tree.
A feeling started in my belly. It was warm. Like drinking hot chocolate. It felt proud. But a quiet kind of proud. It’s mine. This feeling is all mine. I don’t need to tell anyone. Knowing I did it is enough. It’s more than enough.
