My journey

"Do you know what? You are an idiot. You are the very classic textbook definition of an idiot. You are wasting the oxygen on this planet. I feel bad for your parents who have to pay such a high fee to get you into a prestigious educational institution. Because you do not deserve any. You belong to a third class college studying BA or B.Com or something. Maybe not even that. You belong in the position that would not require any brain. That kind of useless crap you are. You will go nowhere in your life. You will remain a failure". I heard all this because the reading that I was supposed to get in my chemistry experiment was wrong by a digit.

Yes you got it right. I grew up in such an environment. Our professors were brutal. They ensure that we would cry while performing the practicals. They would bully us. And surprisingly there was nothing to shield us. We were expected to be okay with the torture from our professors. They would humiliate us in front of the entire class, sometimes even in front of other professors. But we are not supposed to say anything. They are our professors. They are monological that is why they are here to teach. We were students. Be were in the college to learn. However, in this entire equation where did bullying come from?

In my case in my college I was simply Bullet because I used to wear western outfits. Are you put very jeans, t-shirts, and sports shoes every day in my college. Where as other girls use to wear salwar kurti for traditional attire. Mind you our college did not have any dress code. T-shirt and jeans were acceptable. But our Evil professors decided that just because of my attire I am a target.

My friends used to tell me that change the way you dress. Switch to Indian clothing. Probably then there attitude towards you change. But then I thought why should I back down. I am not doing anything illegal. I am not doing anything that is against the rules. If I back down this time they will impose new restrictions on me. Right now I am a target. If I back down I will be an easy target. I did not want that.

I continued my 4 years in this kind of bullying. And not just me, each and every student was tortured for a some or the other reason. I wish there were some advisory boards for some regulations back in the 2000s. The professors had no one to fear. They were free to do whatever they liked.

Now all the years have gone by. Last year I went to my college. It was foring a career guidance lecture to the students were currently studying there. At that time I met the professor who used to bully me. The one who used to say that I would go know where now was saying where have I reached. I thought that probably she would get surprise to see me successful. In reality she did not care. She did not care whether I was successful or whether I field in anything that I did in my life. Be had the attitude that she was supposed to teach and she had done her job. She showed no remorse towards me.

This made me think about my entire journey. Did I deserve being bullied? Absolutely not. Was I hurt? Yes definitely. Was the humiliation required? Absolutely not. What I happy to meet my professor my bully? I did not even intend to meet her.

This is how our life is. It throws a courveball at us. It does not matter what the outcome is. It is important that how we play the game. In my case I do not wish anything on to that professor. But if I were in her shoes I would have ensured that I am treating my students with respect. But that is just me!

No one deserves to hear words like that, especially from people who were supposed to teach and guide. A single mistake never defines intelligence, worth, or potential. The fact that you kept moving forward after carrying that kind of environment says more about your strength than those voices ever could.

I am terrified of going into academia, doing research, finding solutions all sounds like a fairytale to me but when I ask ppl actually supposedly living this fairytale look at me as if they are trying to stop a curse from passing onto the next gen.

I am sorry that the person who is supposed to guide you is actually degrading you and demotivating you. College is supposed to be a place where you start to feel confident. But the reality is far more devastating and it is almost like the college professors are training you for how the real world works with sharp words and uncaring environment
