My guilty pleasures
There are certain things I enjoy that I would never proudly announce in a room full of people. Not because they I would never proudly announce in a room full of people. Not because they are terrible, illegal, or particularly embarrassing but because they don't match the version of me I usually present. Everyone has a private collection of little indulgences, Mine just happens to be slightly ridiculous.
One of mine Is watching terrible reality television. The worse the arguments the more invested I became. I can spend an entire evening watching people I have never met argue about absolutely nothing while eating snacks and pretending I am above it. I am not above it. I am emotional invested in people whose names I forget tomorrow.
I also have a habit of rereading old conversations. Not constantly and certainly not the messages I should have deleted. Sometimes I open an ancient chat simply because I remember a particular joke or conversation. It feels like opening a drawer filed with photographs. L know the moment has passed, but apparently my curiosity hasn't.
Another guilty pleasures is buying things I absolutely don't need because they are cute. A notebook I will probably never write in .A mug that looks vaguely intersting. Hair clips I already own in three different colours. I know perfectly well that I am being manipulated by packaging. Yet somehow I keep walking toward the counter.
I have also developed a strange attachment to eating snacks at inappropriate times. Midnight seems to make everything taste better. A perfectly ordinary packet of chips becomes an important life event when everyone else is asleep. I know I should probably sleep, but there is something satisfying about sitting alone in silence, eating something unnecessary.
Music is another one. I have playlists containing songs I would deny liking if someone caught me listening to them. Some are dramatically cheesy.. some embarrassingly nostalgic, and some are simply songs that make absolutely no sense with the personality I pretend to have. Alone in my room. However, I have no reputation to maintain.
Sometimes my guilty pleasures is stalking absolutely harmless internet rabbit holes. I start by searching for one completely ordinary things and somehow ended up reading about someone's childhood, an abandoned building a forgotten celebrity interview,, or an obscure historical event. Three hours disappear and I emerge knowing everything except why I started searching.
The funny thing is that these pleasures arevprobably only guilty because I have decided they should be. Nobody is standing outside my room keeping score. Nobody cares that I watched six episodes instead of doing something productive. Nobody knows that I bought another notebook. Yet somehow I still feel the need to justify enjoying things.
Maybe that is what I like about these little secrets. They belong entirely to me. They aren't achievements, personality traits, or things I need to explain.
They don't make meore successful or impressive. They simply make ordinary days slightly more entertaining. Perhaps adulthood doesn't need to be serious every second. Sometimes being ridiculous is its own kind of relief.
So I will probably continue having my strange little habits. I will watch terrible television, buy unnecessary things, eat midnight snacks , revisit ancient conversations, and disappear into pointless internet searches. I may never proudly list them as accomplishments, but I don't think everything we enjoy needs to be respectable. Some pleasures exist simply because they make us smile.
When you find yourself enjoying something you'd never admit to others, you
Your vote is final.
