Chapter 2: The borrowed Notebook

It was break hour.

I was scrolling through my phone while both my roommates were talking. I could tell they were trying to make me feel included,so I put my phone away and started paying attention to their conversation.

They were talking about a senior who was apparently quite popular on Instagram.

I was only half listening.

Suddenly, I heard a voice from the desk to my left.It was a guy I'd never really noticed in class before.

"Have you completed your maths notes?" he asked.

I got flustered for a moment, but I nodded and handed him my notebook.

He took it and quietly walked away.

Only then did I realize he sat on the last bench.

No wonder I'd never noticed him, I thought.I hardly ever turned around during class.

A little later, I noticed his friends laughing and teasing him about something. I didn't think much of it.

A few hours later, while I was resting my head on my desk, one of the girls handed my notebook back to me.It was time for our maths class, and apparently he had asked her to pass it back to me since he was sitting at the last bench.

I thanked her with a small nod.

As I flipped through the pages of my notebook, something caught my attention.

On the last page, he had left his signature.

Next to it, he had written the number 71.

Weird, I thought.

There was also an out-pass slip tucked inside my notebook.

That's when I came to know that he was staying in the dorm too.

Before asking the girl behind me to pass the slip back to him, I couldn't resist taking a quick look at it.

That's when I realized something.

His name wasn't actually "Dhruv."

It was "Thiru Vickram."

"No wonder all the professors keep getting his name wrong," I thought to myself.

He must have accidentally left the out-pass slip inside my notebook when he returned it.

For some reason...

I never erased his signature from the last page.

I simply pretended I hadn't noticed it.
