Learning to say no without feeling guilty
Today, I found myself thinking about how difficult it can be to say “no” to people. For a long time, I believed that saying yes was the best way to keep everyone happy. I worried that if I refuse someone’s request, they might think I was rude or selfish. Because of this, I often agreed to things even when I was already busy or tired.
Looking back, I realise that always saying yes was not making my life easier. Instead, it often left me feeling stressed and overwhelmed. I would finish one task and immediately start another without giving myself enough time to rest. Sometime I even felt frustrated, but I can’t expressed those feelings because I had made the choice to take on too much. Today I started thinking differently, I realise that saying no does not mean, that i do not care about other people. It simply means I am being honest about what I can manage. Everyone has limit and it is impossible to be available for everything all the time. Respecting my own time and energy is just as important as helping other.
I also noticed that people usually understand more than I expect. Most of the time they appreciate an honest answer instead of a promise that I cannot keep. Saying no politely is much better than saying yes, and then feeling stressed or unavailable for do my best. This realisation made me feel a little lighter.. I am beginning to see that honesty can actually strengthen relationship because it creates trust and prevent settlement from building quietly overtime. When I speak clearly about my limits, I give other a chance to understand me better and respond with the same respect i hope to offer them.
Another lesson is that setting boundary is a skill that takes time to learn. At first, it may feel uncomfortable because I am not used to it. However, I know that with patient it will become easier. I do not need to explain every decision or feel guilty for protecting my own well being.A simple and respectful answer is enough. I want to become someone who help other when I truly can, but I also want to be realistic about my own needs. If I constantly ignore my limit, I will eventually feel exhausted. Taking care of myself, allow me to be more present and supportive when I choose to help someone.
This reflection reminded me that balancing is important in every part of life. Being kind to others should never mean being unkind to myself. I can be thoughtful, caring, and respectful while still protecting my own time and peace of mind.
From now on, I want to pause before automatically saying yes. I will ask myself whether I really have the time and energy to take on something new. If the answer is no, I will remind myself that it is okay to say it politely and without guilt.
Sometime the kindest thing I can do is to be honest, both with other and with myself..
This is beautifully written and I completely agree with this. We should say NO to the things we don't want and that makes us uncomfortable
sing yes does not do asked any good. it adds on to the burden. it crushes us. we always think that saying no will make us a villain. it does make us a villain in our own life story. it is good to learn to say no in the real life.
