Learning to enjoy my own company

AnonymousJul 10, 2026512 words

There was a time when I always wanted to be around people. I felt that every free moment had to be spent talking to friends, going out or staying busy. Being alone, sometimes felt boring, and I often thought that enjoying my own company meant I was lonely. But over time, my perspective slowly changed. These days I have started enjoying my own company more than I ever expected. It did not happen overnight. At first, sitting alone with my thoughts felt uncomfortable. I would immediately reach for my phone, Look for something to distract myself. Silence felt strange because I was so used to feeling every moment with noise.

As time passed, I realised that being alone and feeling lonely are two different things. Being alone, simply means spending time with yourself. Feeling lonely is the feeling of missing connection. Once I understand that difference, I stopped being afraid of spending time on my own.

now I genuinely enjoy doing simple things by myself. I like reading a book, watching a series on Netflix, organising my room or simply sitting with a cup of tea without feeling the need to talk to anyone. This moment help me slowdown and notice things that I would normally miss during a busy day.

Spending time alone has also helped me understand myself better. I have become more aware of my thoughts, my habits and the things truly makes me happy. When I am constantly surrounding by people, it is easy to forget to listen to my own mind. Quite moment give me that chance to understand myself better.

I also think that enjoying my own company has made my relationships healthier. I no longer expect other people to fill every empty space in my life. Instant I enjoyed their presence while also appreciating the time I spent by myself. It feels like a much healthier balance. Of course, there are still days when I miss having someone to talk. That is completely normal, but I no longer see being alone as something negative. Instant, I see it as an opportunity to rest and recharge before stepping back into the busy world again.

One thing I have learned is that the relationship I have with myself is the longest one I will ever have.

If I cannot enjoy my own company, it become difficult to feel truly comfortable anywhere else. Learning to appreciate myself has been a quiet but important part of growing up.

today, I do not need every day to be exciting or full of plans. Sometimes the best day are the ones where I simply spend time with myself without feeling guilty or lonely. Those quiet moments remind me that peace does not always come from the people around us. Sometime it comes from feeling comfortable with who we are. Learning to enjoy my own company has not made me distant from others. Instant, it has helped me become more confident and more powerful alone. I am more grateful for both the relationship I have and the quiet moment spend with myself.

As we grow up we understand the importance of enjoying our own company. I learnt this in my 30s and I wish I had learnt this earlier.
