Kittens

It was a rainy evening. I had just finished my work and I was packing up my laptop. While finishing up I heard of faint squeak. It was already dark and I assumed that the squeak came from a parrot that had flown by my window. I love listening to the birds chirps and squeaks. As I thought that it was a parrot that had passed by I decided to ignore that squeak.

Within few seconds I heard the squeak again. I thought to myself that it was not a bird passing by but probably it is coming from an animal. I decided to listen to it intently to find out who is making that sound. I heard the sound again. I went to the balcony so that I could hear it more clearly. The squeaks were coming from the ground floor. They were loud enough to be heard on the 8th floor where I stay. Now I was sure that they are not coming from birds. I decided to listen to the sounds carefully to identify which animal could be making them.

After hearing the sound for a few times I realised that kittens are making the squeak. There are many cats and kittens residing in my society complex. Hence this was nothing unusual. Everyday I see 4 grey and white kittens freely roaming around in the society complex. I assumed that those kittens must be hungry and hence they are making the noise so that people would feed them. I decided that it did not require any intervention from my side.

I went to the kitchen and started preparation for the dinner. After chopping the vegetables I decided to go to the balcony again to see if the kittens are still making the noise. To my surprise the noise had continued. Now the noise had gone louder. It was so loud as if I felt that the kittens are in my balcony and they are screaming at the top of their tiny lungs. I felt that this was the time when my intervention was required.

I called up the society security guard. I told him that somewhere kittens are screaming and I requested him to check if any kitten is in trouble. The society security guard who also is a cat lover was also concerned after hearing from me. Immediately within a minute I saw that he started off with his patrol. I saw him checking each corner to investigate if any kittens are stuck anywhere. This was the time when I felt that the kittens will get the adequate help. I returned to the kitchen finish my preparation for dinner.

After half an hour I received a phone call from my downstairs neighbour. She too had heard kittens squeaking. She asked me if I knew anything about it. I told her everything that had happened from the evening till the time she called. Both of us decided that after the dinner around 10 o'clock we would go on a patrol to see if any kitten needs our help.

Around 10 o'clock when both of us went around our society complex to find for the helpless kittens, we found that there were newborn kittens who were squeeking. The mother cat was with them. Another neighbour had already taken over the situation and had provided the cat family with a box, a cushion, a blanket, and cat food. We were glad to see that the felines are being helped. Looking at the beautiful cat family me and my neighbour decided that next day onwards we will bring cat food for them.

With that happy feeling we decided to return to our homes.
