I started my postgraduation program today. Well.. I just went for the orientation, but yes. And here’s one thing I noticed.
Okay so let me give a little bit background. I got done with my bachelors a few months ago, and started my masters in a local college. I think my four years undergrad taught me a lot of things. It wasnt just the course work, ofcourse. It was living alone in a city away from family, adjusting to living with people 24/7 since it was a reaidential campus, and moreover, adjusting to liberal arts, a concept which was completely away from CBSE, a teaching and learning style I was used to since a I was a kid.
Anyway. So the thing I noticed. I went inside, and firstly, comparing myself to 4 years ago when I was just entering college for my undergraduate orientation… I remember pretending to be ‘cool’. I remember I pretended as if I was definitely not scared of being along since I had made some friends and.. they’ll be there till the end of college and beyond right? So I am doing sooo much better than others (ofc I was wrong). I remember being there for every little event because I was scared that I will get ‘scolded’ if Im not there. And then fast forward to first day of postgraduation.. I was actually not at all nervous. It felt like Inwas just there to put in my attendance and.. nothing else. I was not at all nervous about how others are seeing me, about how some people already have friends and I was there alone, but mostly importantly, what if I never get to make friends here? I wasnt and still am not nervous about that. Maybe a bit of maturity suddenly hits you when you graduate?
Even when I looked outside, at other people.. I could easily tell that most of them were there, just exiting school life and starting college. Looking at the way they were acting, the expressions they had on their faces.. all of it reminded me of my first day. And then I saw people who were there for their masters.. and you could see the difference. Everyone was just focused on getting done with their registration, and most of then hadnt even come… maybe because we all know that orientations dont tell us much about how college will actually be. It is just a way for the college to introduce the deans and faculty to us (people we’ll anyway meet when classes start) and for us to meet people in the same cohort as us (again, people we’ll meet when classes start).
Honestly speaking, today helped me realise how much college life teaches you. How aware you become of yourself and how accepting you become of the different kinds of people you meet. I feel like entering the adult world really makes you realise how big the world is.
It makes you realise how you honestly never know what your journey holds.
That is beautifully written about the loss of nervousness and hesitation and leaving behind that version when you know that you will have less consequences
the best part of growing up is realizing you no longer need to prove yourself to every room you enter.
