How books became my best friend

I don't remember the exact moment when reading became one of my favourite things. There was no particular day when I opened a book and decided it would become a permanent part of my life. It happened quietly, the way most important things do. One story became another, them another, and somewhere along the way , books stopped being something I simply read. They became somewhere I want . That is probably why I think of books as one of my best friends. A friend doesn't always have to speak back.Sometimea, it is enough that they are there when you need them.

Books have been there during boring afternoons long journeys sleepless nights, and those strange periods when I wanted to disappear from my own thoughts. I could pick one up and suddenly become somewhere else a crowded city, an ancient kingdom a magical school, someone else's childhood, or someone else's heartbreak. I could live a hundred lives while sitting in the same room. Unlike real life, I never had to explain myself before entering. A book never asks why I am quite. It doesn't expect me to be entertaining. It doesn't become implement if I disappear for weeks and return later. If simply waits.

Sometimes I read because I want to escape. There are days when my own life feels repetitive, confusing of exhausting. On those days, entireing someone else's story gives my mind somewhere elsebto go. My problems don't disappear, but for a few hours, they stop being the only thing happening in the world. Yet books have also done the opposite. They being me closer to reality. A character experiences something I have never gone through, and suddenly I understand a life completely different from mine. I have felt angry at fictional people, mourned people who never existed and carried certain sentences in my head long after closing the book.

That is what makes reading etrange and beautiful. A collection of words can make me care about someone who isn't real. It can make me miss a place that doesn't exist. It can leave me staring at the last page refusing to start another book because I am not ready to leave that world. Books have introduced me to versions of myself I didn't know existed. Sometimes I find my own thoughts written by an author who lives decades ago in another country, with a completely different life and realize that feelings I thought were uniquely mine havev already been felt by thousands of people before me.

Maybe that is the greatest comfort of reading. I can be physically alone without feeling entirely alone. Somewhere a person I have never met wrote a thought I needed years before I was ready to find it. I open a book on an ordinary day, find it waiting there and suddenly feel understood. So yes, books became my favourite thing, but calling them a hobby feels incomplete. They keep me company when people are unavailable conversations feel exhausting, or the would becomes too loud. I know exactly where to go to a shelf, a familiar cover , and a story waiting patiently for me to return. Perhaps that is what a best friend really is something that can takebyou somewhere else without making you feel like you have to leave yourself behind.
