Have it All is a myth
June 7, 2026 – 11:45 PM
“You can have it all, just not all at once.” I used to believe that quote was liberating. Tonight, it just feels like an excuse for failing the people who matter most.
It’s almost midnight, and the house is completely silent. I’m sitting in the glow of my laptop screen in the kitchen, listening to the hum of the refrigerator. Another 14-hour day in the books. Another deck finalized. Another client crisis averted.Another day where I was entirely absent from my own life.
The Audit of Today's Losses
We are trained to measure everything in this job—KPIs, ROI, utilization rates. If I were to audit my personal life today with the same ruthless precision I apply to my clients, the metrics would be devastating. Here is what my calendar demanded I sacrifice today:
- Maya’s bedtime story: I promised her yesterday that I’d be home in time to read her a book. I missed it by three hours.
- Dinner with my spouse: The plate covered in foil in the fridge is a loud reminder that we haven't sat down for a meal together, just the two of us, in over a month.
- Drinks with Mark: Canceled at the last minute. Again. I think he’s going to stop inviting me, and honestly, I can't blame him.
The Paradox of Ambition
I spent my twenties sprinting to get to exactly this level. I am on the partner track with a salary that ensures the kids' college funds are growing and that we can afford the life we always talked about. But what good is providing for a life I’m barely present to participate in?When I’m at the office, I feel guilty for not being home. When I’m at home—on the rare occasions I’m actually awake and present—my mind is completely fractured. I'm nodding along to stories about the kids' day, but mentally, I'm redlining an operations strategy for a Q3 merger. I am physically here, but I am a ghost.
The Breaking Point
Something has to give. The consulting life is a marathon, but I am sprinting it on an empty tank. I keep telling myself it’s just this phase, just this project, just until the promotion. But there is always another project. There is always a new fire to put out.I need to draw a hard line. I don't know exactly what that looks like yet—maybe it means aggressively delegating, maybe it means setting strict offline hours, or maybe it means stepping off this specific track altogether.Tomorrow, I will close the laptop at 6:00 PM. No matter what is burning down in the client's world, I am going to be the one who puts the kids to bed. That has to be my new non-negotiable.
This journal entry describes feeling torn between career ambition and family life. What's the hardest sacrifice to make?
Your vote is final.
The line ‘audit of today’s losses’ hit hard. Success can look complete from the outside while carrying quiet sacrifices nobody sees. I hope you remember that feeling torn between ambition and the people you love doesn’t make you a failure—it means both truly matter to you.
The working environment is squeezing the life out of us and it will be too late to stop it when we are going around circles to achieve the target ... I hope it gets better for you and everyone
The bad side of capitalism is shown again with proof. But there is nothing we can do when there are a not of things going without us knowing.
