Grey hair

This happened a couple of days ago. I WhatsApp setting with my nephew and we were going through a magazine. This is one of our favourite activities. Ever since he was a baby I would take him with me and we would go through the Fashion magazine together. I would tell him about the piece that I liked and he would tell me about the piece that he liked. We would tell each other the reason for liking a particular piece. This is one of our routine activities which we were doing the other day. While looking at the magazine he suddenly stopped. He look at me and said, "aunty you have a white hair".

I corrected him by saying, "it is not called a white hair. It is called a grey hair. You can also call it silver hearing if you want to say it in a fancy way."

"Okay. Got it," he said and continued browsing through the magazine.

What he said made me think. I am in my late 30s. I know I am growing old. Saying "growing old" is little bit of a stretch but it is true that I am aging. Every wrinkle on my face tell me that. Every fine line unknown sis that I am not getting any younger. And now I have a couple of grey hair, the harbingers of the old age. These are the signs of aging. In recent years I have come to realise that this is my reality.

Sometimes I look back at my older photos. How amazing I would look in my 20s and early 30s. I would say that I look better in my 30s then in my 20s. I had amazing skin. I looked gorgeous. I did not have voluminous hair but my hair was of amazing quality. Most of my friends had problem of grey hair in their early 20s itself. I did not have any problem with grey hair until I turned 35. After that I started seeing one or two grey hair.

The first grey hair that I know test made me emotional. It give me an indicator that aging starts now. It told me that probably I am not going to look as good as I look right now. I will start getting wrinkles and crow feet, which I did get later. Every first of our experience teachers something new. My first grey hair taught me that nothing is constant and a change is approaching.

I do not remember what was my reaction when I got the second or the third grey hair. After seeing my first grey hair I had accepted the process of aging and stopped worrying about it. I accepted that this is how it is going to be. I did not worry much about the grey hair. The grey hair that I had were much in the interior so those were not visible. But when my nephew noticed my grey hair it made me realise that the grey hair had definitely grown in numbers and now they are visible.

Yet I am not worried about them. I have embraced aging. When I was younger I used to think that I do not want to grow old. But today I believe that growing old is a privilege denied to many. I must have done something good in my life that is why I have been granted with the privilege of growing old. My grey hair, visible or not are just the indicators that I am on a journey of life and I am ready for that.

“I never realized how normal this sounded until you pointed it out. It’s funny how language quietly shapes the way we think about aging. This was such an interesting observation.
