Can Fiction Change the Way We Think?

AnonymousJul 2, 2026682 words

When someone says that the books, anime, or video games are "just fiction." I always wonder if that's really true. The stories may not have happened, the character may not exist, and the places might only exist in someone's imagination. Yet somehow, they still manage to make us laugh, cry, or even question the way we see the world. If something that isn't real can leave such a lasting impact on us, maybe fiction is more powerful than we give it credit for.

Most people think of fiction as entertainment, and in many ways it is. After a long day, watching a movie or reading a novel is a great way to relax. But every once a while, a story does something more. It stays in your mind long after you've finished it. You start thinking about the decisions the characters made and wonder what you would have done in their place. Without realizing it, you've started reflecting on your values.

Experiencing Lives Beyond our own

One reason fiction can change the way we think is because it allows us to experience lies that are completely different from our own. We can understand what it feels like to be a detective solving impossible mysteries, an astronaut exploring another planet, or someone simply trying to survive in a difficult world. We know these experiences aren't real, but our emotions while experiencing them certainly are. Stories give us the chances to understand perspectives we may never encounter in real life.

A Story That Changed My Perspective

I realized this after watching Cyberpunk Edgerunners. At first i expected it to be another action packed anime with impressive animation. It definitely had those things, but what stayed with me wasn't the action. It was the characters. Watching David slowly sacrifice more and more of himself to achieve someone else's dream made me think about ambition in a completely different way. His determination was inspiring, But it also became destructive. By the end of the series, I wasn't just sad because the story ended. I was thinking about how far people are willing to push themselves for success, love, or even acceptance. A fictional story made me question something that exists in the real world.

Stories That Leave Questions

This isn't limited to one anime or one book. Many stories explore themes like loneliness, identity, friendship, revenge, hope. Sometimes they don't even try to teach a lesson directly. Instead, they ask difficult questions and leave the audience to find their own answers. i think those are often the stories that stay with us the longest. They don't tell us what to believe, they simply encourage us to think.

Of course, fiction doesn't affect everyone in the same way. Two people can watch the same exact movie and walk away with complete different opinions. One person may forget it the next day, while another keeps thinking about it for years. I think it depends on where someone is in life and whether the story connects with something they have experienced or wondered about before. The right story at the right time can have a surprisingly deep impact.

Fiction and Reality

Some people argue that fiction is an escape from reality, and they're not wrong. But i don't think escaping reality always means ignoring it. Sometimes stepping into a fictional world helps us return to our own with a different perspective. A story can make us more empathetic. challenge our assumptions, or even inspire us to become a better version of ourselves. that's not something everyone expects from entertainment, but it happens more often we realize.

Final Thoughts

In the end. I don't believe fiction changes us overnight. It usually happens slowly. A conversation between two characters, a difficult choice, or even a tragic ending can leave a small idea in our minds. Days or even months later, we find ourselves thinking about it again. Maybe that's true power of fiction. It doesn't change the world directly, but it has the ability to change the people who live in it. And sometimes, that's enough to make all the difference.

I think that fiction tells you a story in a way that you can understand

a lot of fictional stories and media change the way we think. if they ask us questions and make a thing then they are definitely worth our time. if we can learn from them then it is an important part of our growth.
