Backstabber

I have had many bad experiences in friendship. I had friends who betrayed my trust. But this particular friend, he completely made me hate him. He was a backstabber friend.

Let's call this friend R. We became friends in the college. We used to travel by train and used to live in the same town. This is how we had become friends. Same town, same train, same college. R also was one of my distant relative's nephew. So it became a sense of relief that I know someone who is somehow distantly related to me. It give me a relief that R will not betray me.

When we were in college we used to receive library books by using our library card. One day R came to me and said that he wanted to borrow a book from library. As per the library's rules one student can issue the book from library only once. The students cannot renew the book. The book has to be returned to the library. R had taken the book on his name and it was the due date to submit it back to the library. He had not finished reading the book and he wanted to complete the book. So he asked me if I can issue the book on my library card so that he can complete reading the book and then he would return it to the library. It felt harmless. He just wanted to read the book and because of the rules he was unable to use his own card. I gave him my library card so that he can issue the book. I completely forgot about this incident and when it hit me I realised how badly I was deceived.

It was the time to receive the results of the examination. I went to the college to collect my marksheet. The professor told me that I cannot receive my marksheet because I am a library defaulter. I was surprised how that can happen because I have never issued a book from the library. The professor told me to go to the library and find out what has happened. I went to the library and asked the librarian that what is the matter. The librarian told me that a book was issued with my library card 4 months ago which has not been returned yet. I said that is not possible because I have never issued a book from the library. The librariam said then maybe somebody else had issued the book on your name. That is when I rememberd it could have been R. Librarian said that the book has to be returned or else I cannot get my marksheet.

I immediately called up R. He was not responding to my phone calls. I asked one of my other friends to call him. He did not respond to their phone calls as well. I was in a real soup. I had to get my marksheet. And there was no way to connect with R and ask him what he had done to my library card. I was almost in tears. We all kept calling him again and again one by one. He was not responding to the phone calls.

After 1 hour he finally pick up the phone call. I told him what had happened and ask me to come to the college immediately. He casually said he forgot. 1 hour later he showed up in the college with the book. I took him directly to the library and made him return the book as well as pay the fine. Despite of the situation R was still not serious. I was really angry with him. The librarian returned my library card and told me the word of wise: never trust anybody blindly.

This lesson stayed with me. After that incident I immediately broke off all the contacts with R. I decided that I will never keep in touch with him. I never support to him again. It is better not to have friends then having backstabbers.
