A Small Change in My Usual Routine
Most days follow almost the same pattern. I wake up, check my phone, get ready, eat something, and continue with whatever I have planned for the day. The details may change, but the basic routine usually remains the same. I never really think about it because routines become automatic after a while.
Recently, I made a small change to mine without planning to.
Normally, I do certain things in a particular order. I like knowing what comes next because it makes the day feel organised. But that morning, my usual routine was interrupted, so I had to do things differently.
At first, I found it slightly annoying.
I had expected the day to go in a certain way, and suddenly I had to adjust. It was not a major problem, but I still felt like something was wrong because I was not following my normal schedule. That made me realise how easily we become attached to small habits without even noticing.
Instead of doing what I normally did, I decided to start the day with something different. I took more time getting ready, sat quietly for a while, and did not immediately start checking my phone. I also changed the route I usually took later in the day.
None of these things were important. They were very small changes.
But somehow, the day felt different.
Taking a different route made me notice places that I usually passed without looking at. I saw a few shops I had never paid attention to before and noticed small things about the area that had always been there. It was strange to realise how familiar places can still contain things we never notice.
I also noticed that changing my routine made the day feel longer. When every day follows the same pattern, hours can sometimes pass without us paying attention. We move from one task to another automatically. But when something changes, we become more aware of what we are doing.
I think that is why even a small change can make an ordinary day feel interesting.
It does not have to be anything dramatic. We do not always need to travel somewhere new or completely change our lives. Sometimes eating something different, taking another route, sitting somewhere new, or simply changing the order of our usual routine can make us feel less stuck.
Of course, routines are not a bad thing. I actually like having some kind of routine because it helps me stay organised. There is comfort in knowing what to expect. Some habits make our lives easier because we do not have to make every small decision again and again.
But doing the same thing every day can sometimes make life feel repetitive.
That is why I think small changes are useful. They remind us that we do not have to follow the same pattern all the time. We can change something without needing a major reason.
By the end of that day, I had still completed most of the things I needed to do. My life had not changed, and the new routine was not magically better than my old one.
But I enjoyed the difference.
Sometimes we become so comfortable with our routine that we forget we have the freedom to change it.
That day reminded me that a small change can be enough to make an ordinary day feel a little new again.
I probably returned to my usual routine the next day.
But at least now I know that I can step outside it whenever I want.
sometimes we don’t need a completely new life we need to experience our ordinary life differently small changes can quietly bring curiosity to familiar days
